Yes, spending on military hardware is a drain on a domestic economy unless the hardware is produced for export and for a profit.
Is it your position that the USA no longer needs allies?

Takes a special kind of ignorance to believe this.

    Which raises an interesting question.
If they do approve the latest billion dollar giveaway to Ukraine, will it be the last, or will the begging bowl be thrust into our faces in a few months time begging for even more money, and the process repeated ad infinitum?

Nah... they just hate pedophiles. So should you! Regarding Ukraine... It was US intervention in their elections and instillation of hand picked US friendly government that caused the rift in Ukraine... Maybe lets stop overthrowing elected governments?!

It will go on forever if they don't provide what is necessary to drive out Russia. They had a chance to affect this war meaningfully in the beginning. Now it appears to be too late. If they won't do it right, then they should not do it. That is why I'm always happy when federal government doesn't do something. It is always a disaster at worst or incompetent at least. I say we should apologize for not doing it right and bring our money back home.

Wow, what a driver in the economy LMAO /s. Yeah, I'm not basing an economic thesis of US productivity on a weapons manufacturer. Not even the neo-cons believe that dog will hunt anymore.

Only so many missiles to buy.

We need the right kind of allies, allies that can stand for itself. One of the main reasons Germany is 0/2 in world wars is the weakness of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and then later on Italy. Right now, we're in Germany's position. Industrial superpower carrying the Austrian-Hungarians and Italians of our day known as the European Union.

They're weak. And it's not a secret that they're weak. They acknowledge their own weaknesses, but they expect us, by way of this cursed treaty to be a life-saver for them. And history informs them well. We will most certainly engage, because that is 'who we are'

It's not who I am. I don't want to be dragged into this by weak and unreliable allies. They should be able to win the conflict, that's on their turf with their forces. If they can't, they are unworthy of alliance with the US.

The title of this thread SHOULD be:

The West is kept (by Ukraine) in artificial deficits of weapons.

We've depleted our POMCUS stocks and are running low on lots of weapons... making the conduct of a two-front war impossible.

No amount of memes change the facts, we have zero vested interest in the Ukrainian outcome. Whether Ukraine is an independent state, or a Russian dependent state has zero impact on American geopolitical policy or US National security.

The only ones who care is the EU, so I suggest more follow France's example and get their teeth into the game.

Interesting isn't it...? I hear a lot of similar voices to yours, urging your countrymen to follow The Stain's lead and to 'dump Europe'. In particular, they cite the 'deadbeat states' of NATO who, according to The Stain, aren't paying their way and who rely on the US to carry the bulk of the burden.

Of course what they fail to mention is that there has only been one instance of NATO invoking Article 5, the "attack on one, attack on all" provision. And for whose defence...?

    For the USA, after 911...!

And? Woopy doo! It doesn't mean ****. This is their fight and their home turf. If they can't defend their own territory, they are next to useless to us as allies. The French only helped the US Revolution when it became clear we could give the British a bloody nose. The EU has yet to show it can do the same to the Russians.

Why should we put our countrymen and women at risk for a continent that can't even win its own battles? Europe can cite that they're funding the institutions, but it turns out we're funding the institutions AND the bulk of the military! Why at this point, Ukraine should become a US State.

And no amount of "you're helping Putin" is going to change the calculus. What will, is if we see more efforts like that of France's. France is the shining example to Europe.

"Useless as allies"...?? Again, the only country that has cried "Help...!!" to the rest of NATO since 1949 and received its assistance, was the US after 911...!! But, I guess that help was "useless", right...?

You want me to be blunt? We needn't have asked. Bush did that to look more legitimate in its lll-gained war, but that was neither here or there.
And considering their own lack of commitment(given how they whined during the retreat), those words fall on deaf ears.

Europe is, as it always does. That's why we had to intervene in two major conflicts and now are center of yet another. Can they do ANYTHING without our help?

It's as if you just put random words on a wall and picked a few to string together.

It shouldn't, but it still does for some reason, shock me how much completely made up nonsense the left can spew

    Huh?
    • NATO is a crisis prevention and management organisation that has the capacity to undertake a wide range of military operations and missions.
    • It is engaged in operations and missions around the world, managing often complex environments across all domains. The tempo and diversity of operations and missions in which NATO is involved have increased since the early 1990s.
    • Since 1999, NATO has led a UN-mandated operation in Kosovo to ensure a safe and secure environment and freedom of movement, and to deter renewed hostilities.
    • In 2018, NATO initiated a non-combat advisory and capacity-building mission in Iraq, which aims to help strengthen Iraqi security institutions and forces so that they themselves can prevent the return of ISIS, fight terrorism and stabilise their country.
    • NATO is maintaining practical cooperation with the African Union, as it is a key international interlocutor for NATO regarding security challenges emanating from the South.
    • The Alliance also conducts NATO Air Policing missions in several Allied countries, whereby NATO Allies with fighter aircraft capabilities help to ensure the integrity of the airspace of the countries that do not possess them.
    • NATO’s contributions to maritime security include the Aegean Activity, Operation Sea Guardian in the Mediterranean and NATO’s Standing Naval Forces. The Alliance’s maritime posture helps maintain situational awareness, deter and defend against all threats in the maritime domain, uphold freedom of navigation, secure maritime routes and protect lines of communications.
    • NATO also carries out disaster relief operations and missions in response to natural, technological or humanitarian disasters. In response to the devastating earthquakes in Türkiye in February 2023, NATO set up temporary shelters for thousands of people and coordinated an air-bridge to deliver vital supplies from Allies and partners.

Dear Mr Ant. First, let me tell you that my experience with NATO isn't from magazines and newspapers, its from first hand experience serving as part of NATO forces in various capacities. I served as an M110A2 (8") Field Artillery Battery Commander (B Btry, 2d Bn, 5th, FA, V Corps Artillery, Babenhausen Germany) in the early 80's. At that time I held a COSMIC clearance, which is the NATO equivalent of a US TOP SECRET clearance. (I held one of those too.)

I also served in Iraq for two years as a contractor after leaving the Army. The first year (2003-4) was spent training the NEW Iraqi Army at KMTB (Kir Kush Military Training Base), collocated with Camp Caldwell. The second year was on staff with Wackenhut Fire and Emergency Services headquarters at Camp Liberty. I have served in other capacities with NATO forces such as integrating Apache helicopters into the British Army training center at Salisbury Plain, assisting with fielding of Apache into Dutch forces, participating in the British FIST (Future Integrated Soldier Technology) effort, was part of the NETT (New Equipment Training Team) which fielded Stinger into Turkish Forces, helped establish a similar effort for Greek forces, and more.

I am quite familiar with NATO operations and missions from first hand experience.

Your list sounds like a public relations press release. I note that there's little there about real combat. There were some minor actual combat contributions by NATO in past years... but they were few. Germany, for example, sent some chemical detection systems to Operation Iraqi Freedom, but such contributions were few.

A "maritime presence" hardly compares to major combat operations like "The Battle of 73 Easting" in which NATO was absent. "Air Policing Efforts" can hardly be compared to the combat meat grinder of Fallujah. And OOW (Operations Other than War) like "relief operations" can hardly be compared to the combat operations conducted by "MNF-1" (Multinational Forces), often referred to as the "Coalition Forces" in Iraq.

Nothing NATO has done can compare to the capture of ISIS largest city (Mosul) and ISIS' capital city (Raqqa) which was executed by US led Coalition forces.

What you describe sounds like a press release, an attempt by NATO to brag a bit.

There isn't much to brag about, however.

You have acknowledged the dispositive fact: "We will most certainly engage..."

Fortunately Ukraine has proved that it is a much harder nut to crack than most of the rest of Europe.
Rather like Czechoslovakia just before WWII and before the West forced them to abandon their defensive positions to appease Hitler.
