the guy cannot read, what can I say? here is a flaming liberal troll calling a black Harvard professor racist, and he doesn't even know it, because he is too [you fill in the blank] to think. What is one to make of all the hate loaded rants and clichés of Johnny-C but lack of anything meaningful when asked to think, particularly in a thread trying ask why blacks cannot learn? maybe this answers the question, maybe this is it right here.

I can see this thread was a mistake. I greatly overestimated the intellectual capacity here, the first 3 posts were way too much detail. Johnny-C probably quit when he learned that he had to spend more than 30 seconds.

My bad on that one, back to the dumb back and forth....

LOL!! I read it fine. And any racist could twist the words of some professor or Bill Cosby to paint whatever sinister or distorted picture they please. Seems to happen a lot in this forum. :)

So if you don't know any black youth personally how can you speak on them as a whole.

What they had black kids coming on the Navy base.

Its very relevant. Nothing takes the place of personal experience.

So now my black kids are not a part of black youth in America. I can speak on more than just my kids to help form my opinion on the subject matter.

Sure they matter, are you not a part of America.

So you speak of 2 students and form an opinion on black youth in America as a whole.

    - Prof. Ferguson

I am learning something here, when confronted with an affront to their primitive religion, black liberals behave in a very reactionary manner. Prof. Ferguson states a problem quite clearly. Instead of addressing that, all they can do is attack me. I guess so that way when they scratch their asses they can feel better that the threat has been dealt with. I have to say that the creationists were much more intelligent when I debated them.

Or maybe he is speaking from personal experience of many of the black youth he has encountered personally.

See the problem is the negative side of black youths is publicized in this country, ie. Knock-out games, Flash mobs, gang banging, etc. See we don't see the stories of black youth graduating from HS and going on to college. We don't see the stories of the black youth who are doing volunteer work. We don't see the stories of the black youth who are getting good grades all that is shown is the negative side of black youth in America and then folks like you take those stories or stats and blanket every black kid in America as such.

    - - - Updated - - -

Ok fair enough now that Prof. Ferguson has pointed out the problems with black youth in America what is his solution to fixing the problem?

first, when trying to be scientific about a problem, one must be detached and not use personal anecdote. That is why personal experiences are irrelevant. Prof. Ferguson is using data then making conclusions, he didn't actually go and talk to thousands of black youth himself.

The data is alarmingly bad, that is the entire point of the Harvard project. There may not be enough success stories in the news to suit you, but what Prof. Ferguson is saying is that would not matter since Hip Hop is much more important to black youth than academic success. His data clearly show that esteem is not tied to grades as much as hip hop. In fact Black male self esteem goes down , when you look at B versus A students. This isn't my conclusion, I am reading it right off his charts. Click on this below

    selfesteem.jpg

what is his solution? government black mentors. what do you think of that? thousands more government employees just to hang around black youth and tell them to value education.

I can see why you are not liberal, you actually seem to care

It probably depends on circumstances. I have seen at least one study that suggested that the amount or reading material in a home was an indicator of academic success. It did not matter what the material was. That could be that kids who are exposed to reading culturally put some value on reading, or it could be that the parents who read a lot are more likely to impose that upon the kids. Sometime correlation needs to be better fleshed out. Likewise, kids who have a lot of exposure to hip hop (regardless of their race) might be raised by the TV, or have parents who party a lot, or any number of things. Hard to draw an actionable conclusion with these types of factors.

but you miss the point, why is esteem tied to hip hop rather than GPA? why is it so important?

    - - - Updated - - -

didn't ask that, I asked if you agree it is a problem

Thats just it, its not a scientific problem.

Some times data is not accurate. At best he is theorizing and when you theorize, as soon as, something changes you have to go back and revise your theory. I am dealing in real life situations. Maybe Ferguson needs to go out and talk to some black youth and then he may get a better understanding of what he is trying to be an expert on.

Thats the problem the data is badly flawed and in some ways inaccurate which is my point.

I can give you example after example where Prof. Ferguson's data is flawed, so you have to take it with a grain of salt.

A few years ago I may have agreed with that, but we have seen a significant change in that thinking lately.

Stop reading the chart and just go out to some of the local schools in year area and meet with some black youth and then come back and tell us what you found.

So you think Gov't mentors is the solution.

If you want it to decrease, work in cleaning up the inequality.

    Government debt isn't a problem.

What the hell does color have to do with anything?

Today's reality is that blacks grow up in poor run down inner city neighborhoods with a broken family unit and an unjust criminal justice system. You already know all this so the question is... what do you propose for a solution? We are tired of you (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)ing about it and using PF as an outlet to say "I think blacks are inferior and stupid." If you are going to (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) about it costing YOU so much money, then go out and make a difference in the black community. If not, move along. Move to another country and start your own white only country.

Afrocentric is not a solution at all. I think all those ideas should be gutted, so we agree there.

Quite frankly, I think the solution is simple. Inner city and suburban districts should be integrated so everyone has a fair playing field. If blacks are still driving everything down after 20 years of that, I'll concede that we are just inferior.

My proposal is simple.. if the Columbus Metro Area is 13% black, 10% hispanic... make all the schools that percentage. All over the country you have schools that are 70% black and brown, or 90-95% white. Just more ways for America to become economically and racially segregated. You are a fine example of the lack of tolerance in this country, sir.

See, you continue to show your lack of intelligence or knowledge of anything in the world. If your daddy is an alcoholic, you are more likely to be an alcoholic. If your momma didn't hug you, are are going to have self-esteem problems in relationships. These are facts from human psychology. Furthermore, this is colorblind. Whites are alcoholics as well. Hell, Native Americans are the most prevelant alcoholics, where is your complaint with them?

No, I don't miss the alleged point. Why does it matter to you whether someone likes hip hop? It isn't like it has to be one or the other. How many decades or centuries have old people been blaming the youth's music for all the ills they perceive in the world? I have heard hip hop all my life, but it has nothing substantive to do with my academics one way or the other.

    Yes, they are.

I can put it to you this way...

Before President Obama, how many black male figures are on TV in positions of wealth and power?

    Athletes
    Rappers

For the average inner city black kid, if he isn't a good athlete, he feels the only way he can become successful is to rap. If his parents are poor and not educated, he has no role model or incentive to do well in school.

White children, by contrast... have successful figures in the media and life all around them that are not rappers or athletes. It is just as much perception as it is culture. Children are like sponges.

So, to answer your question.. if black youth is to succeed, there needs to be more successful black family men involved in the lives of black children and teenagers. It really is that simple. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy, due to the socioeconomic demographics of the country.

What President Obama has done for the black community is invaluable. Simply becoming President gives black children a figure with which to strive for.

I am a trained scientist, you are telling me that science doesn't work when all my life I have seen its success. You cannot trust 'what people say', there is no substitute for good data.

You say things have turned in 3 years, that all this is wrong?

in 2010 there was this Proficiency of Black Students Is Found to Be Far Lower Than Expected http://www.nytimes.com/2010/11/09/education/09gap.html?_r=1&

    and 2 months ago this

    http://dropoutnation.net/2013/11/13/young-black-men-left-behind/

    .

not trying to be disrespectful, but why should I believe you instead of these other sources such as standardized tests?

    What Frank will never understand...

is that most Hip Hop record sales are suburban white customers (over 70%).

    Surprise :)
