When they say 'Obama', remember, he is merely the figurehead, just like the kill list, that he appears to be swanning around with, he is not personally sitting there, with Michelle at night, sipping hot milk, and making up 'his' list.

Whoever such things come from, whoever is the brainchild behind them, it sure is not Obama. The 'Nobel Peace Prize Winner'...

    *******************

US President Barack Obama quietly signed his name to an Executive Order on Friday, allowing the White House to control all private communications in the country in the name of national security.

President Obama released his latest Executive Order on Friday, July 6, a 2,205-word statement offered as the “Assignment of National Security and Emergency Preparedness Communications Functions.” And although the president chose not to commemorate the signing with much fanfare, the powers he provides to himself and the federal government under the latest order are among the most far-reaching yet of any of his executive decisions.

“The Federal Government must have the ability to communicate at all times and under all circumstances to carry out its most critical and time sensitive missions,” the president begins the order. “Survivable, resilient, enduring and effective communications, both domestic and international, are essential to enable the executive branch to communicate within itself and with: the legislative and judicial branches; State, local, territorial and tribal governments; private sector entities; and the public, allies and other nations.”

President Obama adds that it is necessary for the government to be able to reach anyone in the country during situations it considers critical, writing, “Such communications must be possible under all circumstances to ensure national security, effectively manage emergencies and improve national resilience.” Later the president explains that such could be done by establishing a “joint industry-Government center that is capable of assisting in the initiation, coordination, restoration and reconstitution of NS/EP [national security and emergency preparedness] communications services or facilities under all conditions of emerging threats, crisis or emergency.”

“The views of all levels of government, the private and nonprofit sectors, and the public must inform the development of NS/EP communications policies, programs and capabilities,” he adds.

On the government’s official website for the National Communications Systems, the government explains that that “infrastructure includes wireline, wireless, satellite, cable, and broadcasting, and provides the transport networks that support the Internet and other key information systems,” suggesting that the president has indeed effectively just allowed himself to control the country’s Internet access.

In order to allow the White House to reach anyone within the US, the president has put forth a plan to establish a high-level committee calling from agents with the Department of Homeland Security, Pentagon, Federal Communications Commission and other government divisions to ensure that his new executive order can be implemented.

In explaining the order, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) writes that the president has authorized the DHS "the authority to seize private facilities when necessary, effectively shutting down or limiting civilian communications."

In Section 5 of his order, President Obama outlines the specific department and agency responsibilities that will see through his demands. In a few paragraphs, President Obama explains that Executive Committee that will oversee his order must be supplied with “the technical support necessary to develop and maintain plans adequate to provide for the security and protection of NS/EP communications,” and that that same body will be in tasked with dispatching that communiqué “to the Federal Government and State, local, territorial and trial governments,” by means of “commercial, Government and privately owned communications resources.”

Later, the president announces that the Department of Homeland Security will be tasked with drafting a plan during the next 60 days to explain how the DHS will command the government’s Emergency Telecommunications Service, as well as other telecom conduits. In order to be able to spread the White House’s message across the country, President Obama also asks for the purchasing of equipment and services that will enable such.

Getting in the frame work for the police state, good and proper. Some would argue the police state is already upon us. Certainly, here in the UK, we're the surveillance state of the world, our politicians love us so much, they are so keen to watch us at every moment...for they love us so dearly.

Obama's masters want it so. It's scary where that country is headed. People who see things like this and say "it's nothing to worry about", that might be true, for now.

But ask yourself this, if your country, that is the United States of America, was headed in a positive direction, would executive orders such as this be required?

If the world was heading in a positive direction, why does the USA and UK continue to invest in technology that pretty much strips away civil rights?

Yes, the dots are forming a somewhat desperate picture, but many will still swim the Egyptian river ;)

Security services to block cell phone towers ahead of NATO summit?

Reports suggest local law enforcement agencies are considering shutting down cell phone services in the city over the weekend and while it will most likely be very effective, many are questioning if the move is legitimate.

According to the National Communications System, the protocol details a “shutdown and restoration process for use by commercial and private wireless networks during national crises.” It was created after the London bombings in 2005, when federal security services shut off cellular networks in New York’s tunnel, fearing a similar attack. Since then, cell phone jammers have been used in situations like President Obama’s inauguration, with the Secret Service claiming there was a bomb threat, as well as a number of other cases.

Most recently, however, cell phone service was suspended in San Francisco, where police of the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) subway system temporarily shut down cell service to interfere with a protest over a shooting by a BART police officer.

Initially, the BART police claimed they had appealed to the cellular providers to cut off services but later admitted to pulling the plug themselves. The American Civil Liberties Union called this move “the first and only known time a government agency in the US has blocked electronic communications as a way to quell social unrest".

Thanks for the article Jack, wasn't even aware that had occurred.

We are going down a hideously disfigured spiral I tell you. A spiral that concludes in an asylum with all doors unlocked.

And those with selective eyesight and hearing, just don't cut it. People need to wake up and SEE what is going on around them.

Hello! This is just normal emergency preparedness. Those mechanisms must be in place to respnd to any nation-wide or regional disaster, whether from earthquakes, volcanic eruptions or terrorist attacks.

Would it bother you people to think for a change?

Germany, 1933, I'm sure we had your type...

Indeed...much like the Enabling Act of 1933 and the Patriot Act of 2001 are merely just...

"normal emergency preparedness"...nothing to do with civil liberties.

I'm dead certain that even up till 1938, we had Germans saying "nothing to worry about", how quickly, it all went South.

In my opinion, this makes a good case for public sector intervention in private sector markets regarding the physical layer of infrastructure in the US; such capital intensive infrastructure usually requires some sort of monopoly in the private sector anyway, and this method could be analogous to a "Hoover Dam" but regarding the physical layer of such infrastructure and which could eventually include conduits to markets for energy, potable and waste water management, and even industrial waste management, with the public sector responsible for ensuring 24/7 availability in any case. Such "conduits to markets" could be market friendly and relieve the private sector of the burden of needing to establish capital intensive monopolies under our form of capitalism. As a public sector means of production it could generate revenue in the manner of Hoover Dam and the Fed and lower our tax burden in that manner, eventually.

One of the problems with us ALL being so reliant on high tech gadgets, a malvolent Gov can jam communcation, shut it all down, net, mobiles, the lot.

Low tech back up is the key.

Do you know why so many Jews were apparently so benign, as they were transported away to intern camps?

And yes, I realise that obviously the Nazi's were ruthless, and there would be much fear of resistance.

However...it's not because they were cowards, imo.

It is clear to me....they believed they were being processed, for deportation.

    Right up until they weren't...

Yeah. They are preparing for all the things that could go wrong to put out the communications grid in the event of a disaster.

Commercial interests have let the electric grid fall into such disrepair that a 20-year storm will plunge half the country into darkness for weeks. Government cannot sit around and wait for the capitalists to restore everything to working order. Emergency communications MUST be restored at the earliest possible moment, and that will take government co-ordination to make sure that everybody is on the same page and getting the communications grid working so that people do not sit waiting for help that is not coming because nobody knows where the problems are.

Al Qaeda and National Vanguard alike would love to see government left without communications the next time they decide to start so (*)(*)(*)(*).

I've even seen indications that some of their agents have infiltrated here.

Our federal Congress should be promoting and providing for the general welfare along with providing for the common defense.

Well, at least here the half-measures involve a switch-off button in case of emergencies rather than pervertly monitoring with intent to propagandize. Because uh, Nixon wanted do the same to the Democrats when he crooked his way in at the Watergate. And for Republicans, because playing God is sometimes the right way to go, and because Johnson started the trend when he bugged the White House when he wanted to collect material to write his autobiography. I can bet Assange knows a lot about all that.

What do ya do? I know I can't afford any more $trillion dollar invasions because we failed to intercept e-mails between terror cells as we try to protect the confidentiality between husbands and girlfriends.

Actually, I NEED these systems to be operating all the time. I can't have kilos of blueflake sitting on a dock in San Pedro while I wonder where in hell my distributors are.

    Laughable.

Ol' Ben was probably just trying to get into some French woman's pants when he said that, but what are the alternative liberties you give up when you lose $1trillion dollars trying to extract a little revenge? I'm just trying to impose a little reality on your pixie dust Republican existence here.

I've been asking myself since FEMA did their test run last year, what type of emergency could possibly require the government to commandeer the nations entire private communications system? There is no such event. Even if asteroids are falling from the sky, there is no need for the government to take over, the news media will burst into flames with information. There is not one event which will simultaneously endanger the entire American populace. There might not be anything sinister going on behind the scenes, but now there is potential for it. There was no need for government to have this ability, but now it does.

    Correct.

And just as they justify, and alter language, to change your view of the horrors they do in the outside world, so too will they do the same, with creeping Orwellian domestic legilsation.

    Including such SMASH HITS as..

    It is for national security.

    It aids us fighting terrorism.

This is just normal procedure, and nothing to worry about.

It helps fight piracy of Lady Ga Ga's latest vid.

    Etc.

"The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre"

"(We) like to talk about (or be told about) democracy but, when put to the test, usually find it to be an inconvenience. We have opted instead for an authoritarian system disguised as a democracy. We pay through the nose for an enormous joke-of-a-government, let it push us around, and then wonder how they all got in there.

Politics is the entertainment branch of industry."

    - Frank Zappa

Soon, those who are asleep, will realize that as we are today, democracy simply does not exist. When the compost is accelerated rather rapidly towards the fan, you will finally SEEwhat was hidden in plain view. And at that time, those of you in the states will be answering to King Hussein Obama. Just kidding, who knows who will be playing the part of the "presidential" puppet, when the powers that be decide that they've had enough of the shadows.

Checkout what Nazi Germany looked like, not too far from what American looks like today. I just cannot understand the people that look up to, believe and sometimes worship government. That's the opposite of what you should be doing.

In our psychotic, lopsided, upside-down Civilisation...Governments have all the privacy, while WE THE PEOPLE are being made transparent. When in actual fact, WE should be the ones with the privacy, since we are just individuals with only one life to live, and government should be kept in check via transparency.
