Salahadin was the first who had the idea to destroy the pyramids .
Some people are so insecure that they are scared of the dead.

So, is this Murgan Salem al-Gohary some sort of Muslim-style Rush Limbaugh? I mean... is he serious, or is he just looking for attention?

In the west, there's a handful of Christo-nutcases who think basically the same thing... that if you visit historical sites from Ancient Egypt, you are in effect paying homage to Set, the ancient-Egyptian god of evil (from which was derived the names Shaitan and Satan).

More interesting was one of the posts in this thread pointing out that some fundamentalist Islamic parties had got representatives in government via free elections. Now there's a twist of irony.

But in retaliation to Gohary’s remarks, the vice president of Tunisia’s Ennahda party, Sheikh Abdel Fattah Moro, called the live program and told Gohary that famous historic military commander Amr ibn al-Aas did not destroy statues when he conquered Egypt.

“So who are you to do it?” he wondered. “The Prophet destroyed the idols because people worshiped them, but the Sphinx and the Pyramids are not worshiped.”

    A voice of sanity.

Wishfull thinking doesn't help. The fact is that he was speaking on a popular TV channel and he has many supporters in Egypt and in the Arab world. As we have seen historical monuments are under a very real threat from modern Islamists who unfortunately are growing in number and influence.

People make too much of the whole Babylon thing. Saddam did restore part of it, but that wasn't the area that was occupied. You're talking a huge area that isn't farmed and has berms and moats already there. What more could you ask for in a base? As for the archeological aspects, that will just add a new historical layer to the stuff that is already there.

He doesn't have any supporters until recently a was a relative unknown , the only reasons he was on a popular TV channel is because they like to stir up (*)(*)(*)(*) and make some drama by finding the craziest and most radical Islamists available and getting them on the air. Boosts their ratings and gets people to talk about the show which is exactly what happened.

I visited Giza a few years ago and was surprised how the ever expanding Cairo proper has encroached on it. Anyway, after having admired the amazing sight of the pyramids and the Sphinx and having been hassled out of some cash by some local spivs and hustlers, I retreated from the complex only to notice that facing directly opposite the Sphinx was a Pizza Hut where I proceeded to head for a burger. Kind of took the shine of the experience somewhat, but I WAS extremely hungry.

Was this the same guy who said that Muslims should not eat tomatoes because it was a "Christian" fruit?

What would be the most clever way to set up false-god statues to draw crazies?

In the middle of the harshest part of Saudi Arabia, such that they die of heat and dehydration before getting there to pull the plug on their body-bombs?

No doubt there is a good measure of truth in your claim of a sensationalist motive however this depends on the man having some credibility. If he really did have no followers and no support for his position then nobody would be interested however outrageous his calls were. He has street credo having been inprisoned twice under Mubarak for making public statements. There is plenty of evidence that his extreme position is growing in popularity, take the demonstrations in favour of Sharia for example, or the PEW poll here:

    harsh punishment.jpg

It appears his call is being taken seriously by some who count:

Calls made by a radical Egyptian Muslim leader to destroy the "idolatrous" sphinx and pyramids are being taken seriously by Egyptian security authorities, Egyptian press has reported.

True; it's understandable though that people halfway across the world would regard the OP as something significant.

    *sigh*

How about if a giant sand-dune drifts at it's normal rate of one inch per year, and uncovers a giant statue of Baal standing on the hard surface.

Arab merchants set it up so accidental-pregnancy baby's can be thrown into its flaming mouth.

Make it cheap for American evangelists to fly to Arabia.

They rage towards the statue and bump into the rank-rabid hick-Muslims raging to destroy the statue from the east. They dust off and trade. They organize to destroy the statue together. Sell Baal-statue destruction implements to both sides. (I'm not Jewish.)

Together they destroy the false-god, and because Muslims cannot drink, a shower of hashish falls from the sky from well coordinated high-altitude light-bombers. They all get stoned together and the world is a more peaceful place.
