From what I can see, most Christians have no trouble making their religion compatible with whatever they want it to be compatible with.

If you want a more detailed answer, I would agree with a previous poster that there are conflicts with Christian beliefs on both sides of the political spectrum. Abortion will probably always be in conflict with a belief in the human soul. Christianity was radical, but modern Christianity is viewed as “traditional” and therefore synonymous with conservativism. At the same time, Christianity doesn’t really square with deporting and defunding the needy.

A lot to unpack here, but let me summarize before going point-by-point.

1) I'm talking about both illegal and legal immigrants.
2) The way our country treats even illegal immigrants is incompatible with Christian compassion.
3) Your excuse for adultery is a weak one.
4) You assume that Christianity is ideologically obligated toward small government. It isn't.
5) You assume conservative = small government and liberal = big government. This is also false.
6) Yes, Trump certainly does trash basic tenets of Christianity.

But they treat legal immigrants like crap too. They are constantly trying to further restrict immigration. Which, by the way, is a big-government position. You are accusing liberals of being for big-government on the one hand, but they are on the small-government side of this one and you are on the big-government side. The most limited-government approach we could possibly have toward immigration would be open borders. This wold also be the most compassionate way of handling it, if you really believe in that whole agape thing. And if you look at the way they treat refugees, who by the way do have a legal right to come here and apply for asylum, you can see the way you proposed that we phrase it is incorrect.

Leaving aside all of the fantasy accusations here of tings like "imposition," this excuse is a poor one. If you'd go back and actually read your Bible, David wasn't revered for his adultery. He was punished for it. And Trump isn't practicing polygamy, which you could argue a Biblical basis for. He is an adulterer. He cheated on his wives. He broke his vows repeatedly. He even bragged about sleeping with married women.

This is the same man that, if you will recall, claims to be Christian but also says he doesn't ask God for forgiveness. You can only regard Trump as "pro-Christian" if you ignore all of the parts of Christianity that talk about basic human compassion.

This makes no sense at all. The "can't serve two masters" verse is about not serving God and wealth. Can you really keep a straight face and tell me conservatives don't love wealth? You didn't explain what you meant, so I'll just assume that by "two masters" you meant big government. However, if you read Romans 13, you'll see that Christianity has no problem with big government. Hell, God's laws in the OT are absolutely authoritarian and far more "big government" than anything liberals argue for. As far as the NT goes, again, read Romans. It specifically says that obeying government authority IS serving God, because God appointed those authorities. It even says it is a sin to rebel against them. Keep in mind that Paul is saying this to Roman Christians in the time of Nero. He's telling them to obey Roman authorities. So, no. Apparently the Bible doesn't buy your argument about big government constituting "two masters." For the vast majority of its history, Christianity has either been apolitical or has favored big government. It wasn't until the Enlightenment that Christians picked up on secular, classical liberal (not the same thing as modern liberal) ideas and adopted small-government philosophies.

Now me, I favor small government. I'm a libertarian. But, no, your equation of conservatives with small government and liberals with big government is a complete fallacy. There are liberals who are outright anarchists, which is as small government as you could possibly get. As for conservatives, there used to be a libertarian wing and an authoritarian wing on the right, which is why I always voted in Republican primaries, but the libertarian side has been locked in the closet ever since Trump (the most big-government, anti-libertarian Republican candidate running) started rising to power. Now you'll find most conservatives are in favor of more government restrictions on immigration, more government restrictions on trade, more restrictions on free speech, more eminent domain, etc.

The bible doesn't ban abortion. The bible doesn't call for prayer as official practices in public schools for all children. The bible is homophobic and this is your best point but the New Testament condemns gays without saying that they shouldn't have legal recognition. Also only about 20% of people are liberal, yet 66% support gay marriage so gay marriage is more than just a liberal issue now.

I think you misinterpreted. What I meant was a belief all liberals have, not some belief by one liberal. I am very sure we can find both liberal and conservative individuals with beliefs incompatible with the bible but that says nothing about liberalism or conservativism in general.

 

I don't know how a Christian could NOT be liberal in terms of today's issues.

Health? Support for each other in time of need? FULL acceptance of others regardless of race or birth? Objecting to foreign wars oriented toward objectives that are specious and/or undefined? Concern for the least among us rather than focusing on the increased benefits to the most wealthy?

I see in another post where you mention the bible as being genocidal. If that's that case, then any nation that has ever fought a war is genocidal. I'll tell you what is genocidal, Planned Parenthood is genocidal, and it doesn't surprise me a bit that most liberals are big supporters of it; supporters of genocide.

 

Jesus required his followers to promote God and God's rules, and to be an example of God's will in all aspects of their life. If a persons #1 priority in life is promoting Christianity, then that person is a Christian and lives a Christian life no matter what their (theoretically) political identity.

But some political ideologies prevent a person from having the promotion of Christianity as their priority. Classical liberalism is compatible with religion, "progressivism" and communism are not (they are not "liberal" in the true sense, but progs and communists have falsely used the word).

 

The least among us are those still in the womb. If progressives can't get that one right, how can we expect them to get anything right?

Decades ago, when the word "progressive" gained a bitter taste in the peoples mouths, "progressives" and the "Left" in the USA co-opted the term "liberal". In the past 10 years or so, having ruined the label "liberal", the progs are back to using the correct labels of "progressive" and "communist" to describe themselves.

That's why I differentiated between classical liberals (promotes the rule of law, civil liberties, the individual over the state) and the people who falsely use the word "liberal" such as "progressives" ( who believe in the state over the individual, oppose the rule of law and civil liberty).
