We were wondering over the last few days what the "government" planned to do about the peaceful protest camps.

Now we know.. Tienamen square times a thousand.

I'm just going to say bits and pieces the TV says and maybe a link later.. Snipers, teargas, bulldozers and tanks running over people, live fire, Sky news cameraman shot dead, the (*)(*)(*)(*) has hit the fan.

Hundreds of casualties in mere hours and clashes have spread across the country well beyond Cairo, including Alexandria.

My opinion? STOP GIVING THEM WEAPONS AND CASH.

Highly unlikely, but we'll see what happens...

This is a full-fledged massacre occurring in real-time as we speak.

Journalists who try to report what's happening are being shot on sight.

God, I hope you're right. Maybe I was being a bit hyperbolic for the purposes of figurative language and/or hype (or that will be my official excuse).

The Egyptian people are not going to allow the US/Saudi/israeli backed Allah-Akhbar crazies to wreck the country as is happening in Syria.
Better to clean them out now. President Hafez Al Assad of Syria got rid of them back in the 1980's and the Israelis have been angry ever since. Now they trying again to take Syria with "Muslim" shock troops again.

First, let me legitimize this thread by offering one of many possible links:

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/world...otesters-camps/2013/08/14/bc079750-04a7-11e3-

This is not yet a civil war. The Egyptian Army no doubt hopes this IS a Tienamen Square; in spite of world condemnation, the Chinese Communist Party was successful in crushing the democracy movement and little more happened after that (certainly no revolts). If that happens in Egypt, many Western countries will probably breathe a quiet sigh of relief and hypocritically continue to pretend nothing much is wrong.

But if the Muslim Brotherhood and/or the Salafists resort to a campaign of violent resistance (terrorism or just violent incidents), this will be a big question mark for both Egypt and the Obama administration. You are not going to have a successful (non-sham) election in such conditions and the effect of the coup and its repercussions will be obvious and very hard to deny.

How about the USA prepares a policy where we DON'T allow Qatar and similar states to start sending money and arms to the Islamists and Islamofascists like they did in Libya and like they are doing in Syria? Regardless of the rights and wrongs of the situation, it is not in America's interest to have Egypt taken over by people who strongly approve of Al-Qaeda and much of its doctrine.

That is a ridiculously thoughtful post!

I'm not sure what makes a "civil war" or not.. Bloodbath however would be a good label for a bad situation.

Even though I despise the Ikhwan, I can't say I'm impressed with the Army's use of deadly force against the protesters. Surely, the security forces have non-lethal means of disbursing protesters...

Yes.. In fact, I thought, (and I'm sure many others) that the "government" would have maintained their "you can leave but you can't enter" policy for the encampments, as well as let the power cuts work their magic.

This response proves only one motive and one motive only.

Yes, that's right, Talon. They should do as the USA does, bring in a helicopter gunship and blow them all to bits.

OMG one of the "government" politicians just got done boasting of "restraint".

Yeah I wouldn't call this "restraint".

He blamed the Muslim Brotherhood for all this violence. Like it's them driving the bulldozers.

If what Abu says is true, the Ikhwan's snipers are only legitimizing the Army's response.

Unless, when they said they are going to win or die for their cause, they really ment it, you can never know with fanatics.

The UK and the EU and Turkey have all now condemned the crackdown. That's good news!

This ought to shake up a rethink on policy (I should hope).

God only knows whose snipers they are.. Maybe the same mystery snipers that turned the peaceful protest into violence to plunge Syria into chaos. Could be CIA snipers for all we know. That's certainly not outside their realm of expertise and experience.

This puts the USA in a bit of a tricky spot.

While they pretend there was no "coup de tat" in order to pretend a military takeover to depose a democratically elected president is something different than it is, now they have to get on board with the free world to condemn the attacks. (if anyone knows of any US statements on the matter please advise).

Certainly NOW that might jeopardize the weapons contracts.

    (or will it?)

The USA are desperate to keep these contracts and thousands of jobs depends on it. But the "government" of Egypt are proving that might not be the most benevolent enterprise.

Hmmm... another moral conundrum. Maybe this time we do the right thing?

This is true, and one can't fault soldiers for using deadly force against people who are firing live ammunition at them.

So what is the "right thing", happy fun dude, for the USA to do regarding Egypt?

Shall we threaten Egypt with nuclear bombs if they don't let the Allah-Akhbar Talmu-"Islamic" terrorists take over Egypt?

Okay there is a live Q&A from Washington occurring right now.

So far, they have urged peace and for the violence to stop and acknowledged that the "government" approach was not the constructive way forward.

    Good!

One thing I don't get....is why we are not celebrating all this.

This is a great thing!...people in that region are fighting each other, and NOT us!

Radical anti western extremists are fighting their own moderates and military...and NOT us!!!!!

If this trend continues...they'll run out of reasons to hate the US...except for our support of Israel, and that should be permanent.

I hope you interventionists remember how many fewer terrorist attacks were attempted on the US when we had no military presence in the region

Let them tear each other apart, till they've exhausted themselves and realize the US wasn't so bad.

Okay I'm not sure who this deputy spokesman idiot is, but here's a nice question dodge.

He said the government would be held "accountible".

He was asked how, and he replied, in various vaguery:

    "remind and encourage"

Big bad USA, the world's policeman, says "please stop! pretty please!"

It shouldnt be a consideration at all, the haters will always find a reason to hate us, even now both sides accuse each other of working for the US.

Besides, the Bible says, at the fall of your enemy, do not glee.
