What the OP once again leaves out, the attacker had a rifle, and unless one has a rifle themselves, the one with the handgun goes head-to-head with a hand gun is going to lose. So now everyone needs to walk around with a rifle.

How many people like to do business where one needs to carry a rifle at all times.

If the argument with regard to spree killings is that it isn't guns that kill, but people, I can see the reasoning. However the discourse the quickly shifts to if it is the person who is the problem, what happens if their spree is because of a florid mental breakdown?
Add to that what we know about medical insurance and the cost of healthcare, it is possible that the ill person has not been able to access proper intervention well before they dramatically break down.
That has to be a factor lined up against all the victims, as well as the argument about the right to bear arms.
If there is an epidemic of mentally ill people whose condition leads to such tragedy, and the individuals can't access decent help, does that mean that American society simply has to stomach spree killings as the price you pay for the second amendment?

Be that as it may, I'm willing to bet a stack that if any person walked in to a clinic or ER and told them they were having an urge to murder a bunch of people, they'd get all the free medical attention they could hope for!
