The Democrats use minority groups as wedge issues to divide us. If they are for them, the others are naturally against them. It's all about pandering to them for their votes. Nothing more. The smart people have caught on and are leaving the party for this very reason. As a woman, it's the reason I left. You misunderstood me. What I was saying was that 20 years ago, give or take, everyone on all sides of the aisle was opposed to same sex marriage, and through their words and deeds, they proved that. It's OK to say that I've changed my mind about somethig that I once felt differently about, but for him to say seeing two dudes kissing in high school (considering he graduated in '61, an event that I doubt even happened) caused him to change his position runs counter to things he said and did up until the 2010s.

The thing with Biden, well one of them anyway, is from time to time he will choose to lie, when the truth sounds better. People who graduated HS in '61 were typically at least, raised in an environment where homosexuality (and bisexuality) was seen my virtually everyone as a sin against gawd, and while I laugh at people in 2023 who think such things, it was almost universal back then. That's simply a fact.

Even leftist politicians didn't start singing a different tune on that until about the same time Biden did, the 2010s, along with many non-politicians as well. That's when I came around on the topic, though in my case it was more of a 'this is how things have ever been, so there's nothing to discuss or debate about it', which isn't exactly demonstrative of giving it a lot of thought.

But I'm willing to admit that, and in my case anyway, my belief change is real, though I cannot put a date on it. Old people are generally pretty set in their ways, and if he has genuinely come around on that issue, good for him, but color me skeptical. I think it's at least just as likely that he says what he feels like he has to say, while complaining about how hedonistic society has become during his golden years.

I cannot even imagine my grandparents, or even my parents, ever coming around on those points, though they may have said so in public. My parents, with my grandparents generation, that simply was not up for debate.

You’re not really asking this question, are you? State legislatures have been going hard in the paint with anti-LGBTQ legislation over the past couple years. There is an active and concerted effort that does not show any signs of slowing in the immediate future.

I live in Florida so I am an eye witness to authoritarian government at work. I do not need to listen to anyone to see what is happening. The FL government is using their authority and their contracts with corporations and liquor licenses to punish those who refuse to support their political agenda. If there was a gun licensing requirement, they'd use that against the people too.

His lie is not unfalsifiable, though. The part about seeing two dudes kiss in high school, yes, you are correct, even though I stand by my opinion that it never happened, because back in the 50s, those sorts of things were kept behind closed doors, and even there it was technically a crime. That, too, has changed for the better.

And, yes, I am painfully aware that the best way to know that a politician is lying is to see their lips moving, but when he makes a statement like this, when saying nothing at all would have been a better strategy, he deserves to get called out for it. He served in the Senate for 45 years, and during that time made no effort to legalize same-sex marriage, or to decriminalize same-sex activities, even those done in private, and I believe he even voted against their interests, especially with regards to DOMA, and who knows what else a detailed study of his Senatorial record might find.

I would respect him much more if he said he didn't use to think gay marriage was appropriate, but came around to the idea and changed his mind, than coming up with some bullshit that he's thought that ever since the late 50s, but never did the first damn thing about it for 40 years, and then the Supreme Court did it for him.

It's just like all his trash talking about the 'MAGA Republicans' (as though that was a singular phrase) wanting to cut social security and Medicare when there is video of he himself saying the same damn thing not all that long ago when he was 'just' a Senator.
