I wanted to post this article explaining the failure of the laws already in place by the government. Liberals like Obama and his lemming followers have this notion that adding another law will somehow prevent a nutcase wanting to kill innocent people, well newsflash, it is the laws that fail and the bleeding heart liberals not wanting to enforce the laws on the books. My opinion is anyone with so much as a misdemeanor of violence should never be allowed to buy or own a gun. Anyone caught purchasing or giving these people a firearm should life in prison without parole, no exceptions. Anyone using a gun in a crime, should be life in prison. So you see liberals, it is the law and it's enforcement that will stop the deaths, not removing them from law abiding responsible people.

And where is the money supposed to come from...

... to build all the additional prisons...

... that would be needed to hold these criminals...

... especially considering the prison overcrowding we already have?

Prison should be half as pleasant and twice as populated.

You're right in that we cannot stop a motivated person that wants to commit mass murder from doing that. Just like we can't prevent terrorism, if someone really wants to commit a lone wolf act. That doesn't mean it's OK for a criminal to legally buy a gun, and they can… despite NICS, despite background checks. The only thing they can't buy is a brand new gun. They can buy all the used guns they want… and they can do it legally.

Some criminals lose their right to vote, even after they have served their prison time. They can't go to another state and vote there. If they can't vote in one state, they can't vote in another. Many of those same criminals lose their right to own a gun. However, they CAN go to any state that doesn't have universal background checks and legally buy a gun. Surely you don't think it is OK for convicted felons to be able to legally purchase a gun, do you? They can though.

The problem we have is that we pretend the laws on the books are doing what they are intended to do. They don't. The American people, by 87%, want all gun sales to have a background check. That would STOP criminals from buying guns, because they can't pass the background check. Each state adopts its own law, and some do not require background checks at gun shows and through individual sales. That loophole allows ANY CRIMINAL to LEGALLY buy a gun. That's right, our laws intended to stop criminals from buying a gun don't actually do that. Now, it's time for us to stop acting like we have made laws that do that. They don't. Your state's lawmakers may have adopted a law intended to make society safe does nothing of the sort.

It's hypocritical to throw up our hands and say the laws don't work, when they were never made to work in the first place.

You can thank your friends at the NRA. This is what they created.

Actual facts are not a concern for those that rely on memes for their information. The NRA has been around a long time. Mass shootings, not so much so the NRA is not the problem. In the 80's it was post offices, thus 'going postal'. In the 90's it was disaffected youngsters shooting up grade and middle schools. I would look more at the changes that really affect mass shootings instead of trying to find a bogeyman that has nothing to do with it.

That would require extensive background checks which the NRA will fight tooth and nail not to have. And since the NRA has linked background checks as to "taking guns away from the ones who had no criminal record," you will be punishing those who actually followed the law when the background check has come clean.

The NRA backed the assault weapons ban in 1994. By the time 2002 arrived, they fought against any and all gun legislation that would ban or make it extremely difficult to own a military style weapon. In fact, they are now going after the 1934 Firearms Act and eliminate the ATF from existence that anyone should own any type of gun regardless of their history. In other words, the NRA of yesterday is not the same as the NRA today.

How many shots are actually fired if an intruder enters your home or if you have to defend yourself.

Personally I'm fine with all private sells requiring a background check. But to think that's going to stop criminals from getting guns is as misguided as thinking laws against meth prevent people from getting meth. Oh and if a person is forbidden from owning a gun under the law, when they purchase one it is already an illegal act. It doesn't matter if it's a private purchase it's still illegal, claiming otherwise doesn't strength your argument.

Yes, scary looking rifles are so dangerous. The hysteria over scary looking rifles was ridiculous at best. The laughable notion that the NRA weakens the ATF after the ATF walked guns across the border by encouraging dealers to ignore the law pretty much points out much of the problem with the ATF.

so, several of these people should NOT have been able to buy a gun.

More since most people, including police, miss the target more than they hit the target.

I agree with what you are saying. Nothing is foolproof. We cannot ever prevent everything bad from happening. I just don't think we should have laws on the books that are supposed to stop criminals from legally buying gun that don't in any way prevent that, but we pretend they do. If we aren't going to control guns being legally purchased by criminals, let's be honest and say we aren't going to place any restrictions on them. Let's not put ineffective laws in place and then use that as an excuse to say gun control doesn't work. We don't know it won't because we have NEVER actually tried it nationwide. We do know that those states that have background checks have less gun violence statistically.

DC has the most strict gun laws and has the most gun crime per capita.

Military style weapons are designed for one thing and one thing only, to kill another human or as many humans as possible. They are not good for hunting big game, unless you want to lose 20% of the meat, or for birds. For hunting, I have a 300mm B bolt rifle for the largest game, elk, and a 242 A bolt rifle for deer. One shot, one kill. The 7.62 mm rifles such as the AR15 or the AK 47/74 are fun to shoot targets at, but nothing more. And what is the point of having that gun if it is only to shoot targets or sit on the wall gathering dust like mine do.

They get the guns in Virginia or Pennsylvania where gun laws are less restrictive, especially in Virginia. Not that hard really.

anyone treated for schizophrenia or bi-polar disorder should immediately have this put into the NICS system so they cannot get a gun, unless a PhD decides that through therapy and treatment, they are stable and safe to possess one.

My sons hunt with bows. My oldest has a bow that cost $2,000. I personally think that guns are more humane for hunting--a quicker kill. I guess bow hunting is more of a challenge though.

My oldest said he got "a monster buck" this year--already. My youngest got a spike, both of them were using bows.

Uh huh, they sure do. However, any of those DC criminals are easily able to go to Maryland or West Virginia and LEGALLY purchase a gun and bring it back to DC. They don't even have to buy illegal guns… they can get them legally. Are you really OK with criminals being able to purchase guns legally? Until the loopholes are closed, that will continue to happen. Let's not pretend gun laws don't work, when we have never actually made laws that don't allow criminals to legally purchase them.

Your opinion of what other people should need or want is irrelevant. Let's restrict your more powerful guns which can do more damage.

    - - - Updated - - -

Criminals cannot purchase guns legally today. What is your point?

Agreed, bow hunting is more challenging. But bows, or at least compound bows, used physics and manufacturing technology, to improve the kill rate. However, have your sons use the traditional English Long Bow when hunting next time.
