Agreed, but it’s the go to verse for those who claim Jesus is god.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Nothing needs to be reconciled in the first verse.

    Example:

In my beginning was my hand, and the hand was with me, and the hand was me.

It's very similar to the personification of wisdom in Proverbs.

Thing don't get difficult until the 10th verse. Most Unitarian-types would explain it with the idea of the second creation.

I think Matthew and Mark saw him as a prophet and were not planning ahead for later Christians to clunkily rationalization him into a god with the trinity.

Jesus is the Son of God. As Gods authorized representative, then he essentially is God, at least in spirit and mission. Still he never took that title or honor to himself. He always deferred to his Father in heaven because that's who he served.

It would be unlikely that Jesus would be able to speak at all. Read about Roman beatings with a whip with metal bearings attached and the effect on the body. Many did not survive even this. The agony of just this, then the crucifixion with nails through the wrists and nerves and the same for the feet. The agony of just hanging there, being only able to breath by trying to raise his body to fill his lungs by use of the feet. His heart straining to give oxygen to the vital organs which comes normally with movement in our daily lives. Dislocated shoulders which happens at the start of crucifixion. Spasms caused by the angle of the legs and weight against the holding the body upright. Cardiac stress bringing on hyperventilation.
If Jesus could utter all these sentence and even consider his disciples and his mother under these conditions, he was superman - not a human vicarious sacrifice

What Books of the Bible does "edna" accept? You are aware that "John", who wrote the Gospel of John, the disciple that Jesus "loved", was the only disciple that stayed with Jesus during His time on the cross? Think John had a pretty good idea who Jesus was.

All we have are words in a book No solid proof. Blind belief. What does that make you? Have you read anything I have posted?
    • The Jews didn't accept Jesus as their Messiah because he doesn't fit their scriptures. Despite what others on here say Jesus is not mentioned in the OT. anywhere. The OT is related to the Jews. Christianity has wrongly claimed otherwise. I've asked where Jesus is named in the OT. He isn't. I've shown you the Nativity stories are just made up and the errors in them. Can you actually deny my explanation? Have you studied the stories against the time in which they were written? The gap in the genealogy which even the Jews cannot explain if Israel were in Egypt 430+ years.
    • Spare me your uneducated knowledge of the Bible and its background. You're just like Mitt was in the old days.

There's also the fact that the word used for "God" in "the Word was God" doesn't have the direct article. It is probably more accurately translated as "god," not "God," and the Bible is fine with applying this word to other humans.

We have historical examples of people surviving crucifixion. He wouldn't have been the first.

Why is this important to you? What do you hope to do? If you won the argument and everyone agreed with you, how would that matter?

Most agree that if the method described is true, he would not have survived.

If you don't want to believe, you don't have to say he survived. You can say like the Muslims do and say that he tricked them into crucifying someone else. Or you can say they lied and faked a living Jesus with make-up 'n such. Or you can do like others and say they made it all up.

Or you can watch the documentary on the most studied artifact ever. A singular, unreproducible event, a "snapshot" of the resurrection of our Lord and Savior

Most of those crucified were not flogged prior. The lashes Jesus received alone were enough to kill a man. Ultimately, that is why died before the other two. They had to have their legs broken to speed up their death.

I'm far from a Bible scholar but I thought the author or authors of John were unknown and written later it seems to have other priorities.....

The gospels were written for everyone - including illiterate slaves. As a result, anyone can be a Bible scholar. The historical information is open to everyone.

So, quoting some other source for interpretation is a logical fallacy - appeal to authority.
