The left doesn't have a unified ideology. In fact the interests of some leftist coalition members is antithetical to other coalition members. However, they are unified by the perception of a common enemy. Think of the WWII unity of the Soviet Union, America, and the UK. That unity was based on the perception of a common enemy.

I challenge the notion that the country is divided between "leftists" and "conservatives". It's a false dichotomy. We aren't diametrically opposed on every issue. The media uses this false dichotomy to pose the people against each other and use the polarization technique to maintain the two party corporate oligarchy.

 

I feel that scenario is very unlikely.

 

Two nights ago I stopped by a Taqueria to pick up some food. I parked in back. I had to pass by two Sureno gang sentinels before I got inside. When I left my way was blocked by two huge enforcers who inspected me up and down before allowing me to pass. If they had made the wrong moves I would have shot them on the spot. They didn't realize that this little old man is better armed than they are. This is reality for me.

I am often amazed at what people here think of as conservative values.

my personal values are not "conservative" - but based on what I regard as common sense, mixed with a very heavy dose of life experience - but here they are identified as conservative.

Alas, they didn't make the "wrong moves". I can certainly understand and appreciate that there are times when people feel threatened. I have had similar experiences though I do not carry a weapon. It's not the weapon we may be carrying, but how we carry ourselves that earns us the respect we get.

 

The whole thing is a sham. The notion that we are divided along ideological left and right is just another way to divide us. It's not merely so they can market trinkets to us, but also so they can market ideas, frame the debate, and push us to choose sides from teams that are already working together for the same overlord.

I hold many views that would be considered "conservative" and many that would be considered "liberal". I tend to be "liberal" regarding individual freedom and "cobservative" regarding the power of government. I think this makes me American.
