This man was obviously following the scripture of the New Testament. You won't have to worry about atheists tearing their eyes out of their sockets, we lack the books ordering us to do so.

It's an analogy.
It means whatever causes you to sin, remove it.
A contemporary example would be if you hang around with a certain group and always wind up in a stranger's bed with no memory of the night (and this is a problem), stop hanging out with those people if you can't control yourself.

I'm not sure how an eye can actually make you sin in a way that you wouldn't sin without eyes. Can't you still imagine visual stimuli?

 

Then you must remove your brain to truly stop sin.

And so, the scriptures are but a collection of dead letters w/o the Spirit to illuminate and bring life to them. That's why some ppl can read them and get nothing (no life) out of them, or even use them to excuse their inane actions..


Really nothing else to say to explain this 'individual' other than a dead-letter literalist in regards to the scripture in the OP.....there's a lot of them in the world. Just like those who beat themselves with whips and voluntarily get nailed to a cross to "identify' with Christ & His sufferings...it's merely dead works on their part and w/o any spiritual merit in the eyes of the one whose sacrifice did count..

Atheists doing bad things? There are quite a few. However, we lack the holy book or even a basic teaching to justify such acts. This man uses the bible, and the verse acting that people cut off their hands, feet, and pluck their eye balls to justify his actions.
