Ohio voters rejected an effort that would have made it harder to pass citizen-led ballot initiatives, in a rebuke of Republican efforts to block an expansion of abortion rights that’s on the ballot in November.

Issue 1, which would have raised the threshold to pass citizen-led ballot measures from a simple majority to a 60 percent threshold failed, Decision Desk HQ projected. With about 42 percent of the votes in, “no” led by a 22-point margin.

Ohio Republicans had canceled August special elections in January, citing high costs and low turnout. But in May, as organizers were gathering signatures to put the abortion amendment on the ballot, lawmakers moved to put Issue 1 on the ballot and scheduled a special election for Tuesday.

Great! Every day you can beat back MAGA fascism is a good day.

Of course, this likely means the abortion rights amendment will likely pass, probably in the 56-44 range, which is what the fascists were trying to prevent here.

Question is, as always.... why do people vote for people who don't like simple majority rules democracy? It's always a mystery to me...

I REALLY don't want to give up on Ohio.... there's a fair amount of educated people there... Next up, we'll see if Sherrod can hold off whatever MAGA the other side nominates.

Republicans said leave abortion up to the people of the state.

Then they tried to increase the threshold for their voice to be heard...

Well, actually what Republicans said was leave abortion to the states.... The last thing they want to do is leave it to the people of each state...

    BIG difference there...

When someone asks me to to define what a blood thirsty ghoul is I’m going to direct them to this thread.

We have libs literally cheering the deaths of innocent people, yet if someone steals a bald eagle egg they’d be in heaps of trouble.

Before attacking me, I’m pro choice and pro responsibility. Women can make a choice but it should be the right choice.

Liberals Celebrating death is something I thought ended when Rush Limbaugh died.

You're jumping the gun, Bucky.... The abortion rights decision is in November.... Save your powder!

This vote is just to support the absolute bottom rung of democracy. Majority rules... Been that way since 3 people voted on something back in the bible times you guys want to take us back to...

Also, I got one more death that has a nice bottle of Pinot on the shelf waiting for...

But the section I bolded is easily the funniest thing I've read all day, so your post wasn't a total write off...

    OP doesn't mention dems.

Ohio citizens voted to power in the hands of the people. You may not agree with it, but that's the way it is.

The woke and dim mayor of cleveland was braying that now they can try to pass a constitutional amendment wiping away preemption (which prevents woke leftist cities from passing laws designed to harass lawful gun owners residing in those areas)

I understand $$ poured in from Kalifornia and othe pro death states to support this initiative in Ohio.
MAWA supporters (Make America Worse Again), will do anything to make death for the unborn legal!

Man, few things rile up the hysterical dinosaurs like an abortion rights thread (or adjacent one, in this case). You forced-birthers are nothing if not consistent in that regard.

What are you talking about? Banning abortion increases the death count in poor women and Republican celebrate it.

    Give me a break.

Antiabortionists are pro death. Banning abortion increases the death and injury count in women.

This will invoke the 'if it saves a single life' argument, but in the interest of playing devil's advocate(which I've done over the last few years, often to my detriment.), medical advances in giving birth have significantly reduced fatalities in birth giving, and even in defects in newborns.

Not that it makes it okay, but every statistic, even from RAINN shows that medical abortions are substantially lower than all other causes/reasons to have an abortion.

I think what Republicans underestimated, is how long Roe V Wade(and Planned Parenthood VS Casey, 1992) have lasted. Literally for my entire adult lifetime and more. Whether that makes it right or not, it is now seen as essential to women of the present generation, and my generation as well. It's therefore something they want to keep.

For my part, I do believe in sanctity of life of both the newborn and the mother, and in the ideal, you could preserve both. When in medical emergencies/doubt, the mother retains top priority(not so much because of her function as a living being, but because the mother can theoretically give birth to a healthier child in the future. Whereas a child without a mother, or a stable household has scientifically been proven to be at a disadvantage.)

When it comes to elective abortions, I think not rocking the boat is the right approach. and to have the limit be at 18-24 weeks. If they can't decide by then whether or not to get an abortion, then god help them.

Absolutely! Dems are the opposite of Republicans, who are so supportive of people's "rights," that they put a measure on the ballot, specifically to make it harder for citizen initiatives to get passed, by raising the bar to a required 60% majority. But those damn Democrats are so against people's rights, that they would want any citizen majority to be able to have control over their government's legislative agenda!

Most folks would have no trouble at all with those who do not wish to have abortions. It's when those who do not wish to have abortions try to dictatorially impose their will on the rest that things get sticky. This is true of a number of 'issues'.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.

I think that would be all folks....

Here are the near final results, barring the Ohio GOP screaming about a rigged election, filing a dozen court challenges then rioting at the Ohio Capitol...

57-43 - I earlier predicted the actual abortion amendment will pass at 56-44, and I'll stick by that margin... there are probably a few people who don't want that right in their state, but Ohio Issue 1 was a bridge too far.
