As I said you are trying to focus on one year and ignoring the same success with Bowling Green, Utah, and Florida. This is not a one time event. Meyer does this everywhere he goes he wins immediately. That blows away you whole, only a recruiter, argument.

you don't think there was no leadership at UF under Zook (prior to Meyer)

Hell, Will Mushamp took a team that ran Meyer off to an 11-1 regular season one year that was a USC upset of ND away from playing Bama in the title game, despite not making the SEC Championship (their one loss was to SEC East UGA).

Haven't seen him on BR in quite a while, at least under a username I know is him. I don't visit the new site they went to.

EXCELLENT POST! Smartest football talk I've read here yet.

What you described as to what makes a successful offense is exactly why Bill Belichick and Tom Brady have been so good for so long.

    Too bad its wrong.

Actually not true. The patriots offense has always been a consistent rhythm offense based on west coast concepts. Whether they are 2TE when they had Gronk and Hernandez or shotgun spread when they had Moss and Welker. Its still the same base plays, still the same offense. That is why they will always have a RB who can catch. WC offense has to have that to work.

Face it the fact that you three armchair QBs agree doesn't make you right it just makes you typical fans.

It's just not sinking in, is it?

The West Coast schematic isn't what makes the Patriots offense successful. It's exactly what I posted earlier, and PD perfectly tied my explanation to the Patriots. May I post it again for you....

Schematics alone aren't what make offenses successful. Rather, the ability to drastically alter play-calling tendencies, as well as frequently changing up the focal points of any team's offense based on the matchups they believe they can exploit, are what make for successful offensive teams.....in college and in the NFL.

And BTW.....altering play-calling tendencies, frequently changing the focal points of the offense, exploiting match ups, etc......not Urban Meyer's strength. Average or 'C' at best.

And you are basing this off of what? I'm sorry but you dont know enough about football to know if anything you said is true. Meyer has won with Smith passing for 3000 yards and 32TD and he has also won with Tebow running option. He won utilizing tight formations when he had TEs like Hernandez. Nothing you aer saying is true. So your statement that he cant adjust his offense is simply bull(*)(*)(*)(*) you are pulling out of your ass for lack of any other argument. Its pretty (*)(*)(*)(*)ing obvious that you are basing your opinion off of this years Michigan State game. Kind of ignoring that they shredded the exact same defense last year.

As for "exploiting match ups" how the hell would you know know. Meyer abused Alabama and took full advantage of their decision to go with 4 down running pin and pull all all (*)(*)(*)(*)ing night. Not that you would notice such a thing.

Yet they couldn't do it THIS year with basically the same players. Humm, what was different? Perhaps the guy who did know how to run the offense was busy with a job in Houston?

Dense, dense, dense. :wall: But thanks for actually aiding my position.

All you've described is Urban tailoring his offensive schemes to his own players, let alone during each player's time at a university. I'm addressing the need to adjust, game to game, even within a game, to take advantage of the other teams' weaknesses. Also, mixing things up to confuse the other team's defense. Utilizing Smith or Tebow or whomever the same way, game in and game out, is so crudely elementary....that's hardly innovative offense.

He didn't adjust at all at halftime of the Michigan St game this year. And against inferior competition all season long.....weaker teams played the Buckeyes far closer than they should have, because OSU (Urban) showed no creativity or adaptability. Thus, crappy teams figured the Buckeyes out. Only reason OSU won a couple of those games was 4 and 5 star talent vs 2 star talent.

So there you go. You are basing your entire opinion of him as a coach on this season.

    Game over you lose.

Well as someone who follows Ohio State I can tell you what was different. Obviously Tom Herman was a big hit, as it would losing a guy like him for any program. But that certainly wasn't the only offensive issue. Our RT, Chase Farris, played terrible. Losing Devin Smith, while having 2 starting WRs go down with season ending injuries early in the season severely hampered OSUs ability to stretch the field. The vast majority of the season, two WR/H backs who would have seen tons of playing time in Dixon and Wilson were injured as well. So yeah, we had major issues at RT and WR this year.

But Urban's offensive genius is the subject here. He should have been able to just plug in the next one of the great recruits he has available. According to Wingdings, he is a master play caller who can work miracles no matter who the players are.

The rest of your post is what we like to call an excuse.

    P. S. Enjoy the Fiesta Bowl.

I swear it's like I'm talking to a child with you. I'm not making an excuse, I'm giving you a honest assessment of what happened with the drop off in offensive production. What I'm telling you is exactly what happened.

Let me reword this for you. If my truck was running great last year, but this year it's having some problems and I give you a list of factual reasons why it's no longer running as well as it did, am I making an excuse or am I stating facts?

Like I said, it's like I'm discussing football with a child. Instead of offering a intelligent rebuttal with any substance to counter my point, you offer nonsensical one liners that contribute nothing to the conversation. Now, if you'd like to counter any point I've made with something of substance, I'd love to hear it. Now, let's hear your version of why offensive production dropped off for OSU instead of the constant opinionated one liners.

I stated why I thought the Offensive production dropped off for OSU this year. But you went on your little rant down a different road. My comment was in regards to Urban Meyers offensive play calling ability, but you had to turn it into something else. Then you made a bunch of excuses why that was so.

    Enjoy the Fiesta Bowl.

Your assessment of why offensive production has dropped off, particularly in the passing game was "Perhaps the guy who did know how to run the offense was busy with a job in Houston?"

So is the question mark at the end of that sentence of yours suppose to represent a question or a statement of uncertainty? I certainly took it as one of the two, which is why you received the response from me. In either case, I would hardly call that a intelligent statement concerning the offensive production from OSU. Perhaps your understanding of punctuation is lacking as well, and that was supposed to be a statement.

I've already told you I will enjoy the Fiesta Bowl, but thank you for the 10th time.

Perhaps you should look up the meaning of rhetorical.

Rhetorical questions are best used in speech, as no one can gauge your tone from a online forum. I'm not sure how much reading you've done in your life, but there is a reason rhetorical questions are hardly used in text outside of one line advertising.

So, it's your opinion that Tom Herman leaving was the entirety of OSUs offensive woes this season, if I have that correct, while its my contention that while you are partially correct, losing four WRs for the bulk of the year while having problems at RT contributed as well. Instead of offering a intelligent rebuttal to my comment, such as the ability/play of the back ups, the RT play etc., I'm given the response I would expect from someone who's hell bent on acting childish. If you're not interested in detailed debate, just so say and I'll happily move on.

You do know that you are welcome to ignore people on this site, right? Not rhetorical, just curious if you are aware.

Sure, losing players can cause problems. However, the only game OSU lost this season was a result of (*)(*)(*)(*) poor coaching. And even the best player on the team said it during the post-game interview. So explain away the (*)(*)(*)(*)ty play calling all you want. If Elliott had been given the chance in the Mich State game, OSU would have won. It has nothing to do with injuried WRs.

Alabama has a couple of pretty good receivers, but the QB position is suspect. So what did they do down the stretch, they rode their horse. And he delievered, just like Elliott probably would have against Mich State.

OSU lost due to coaching, not because the other team was better or they had people hurt.

You do realize that they finished with only 1 loss bu 3 points to the 9th ranked team in the nation. You 3 armchair QBs are talking like OSU was barely bowl eligible.

Oh and if you insist that real coaching is about adjustments where were Saban's adjustments last year when OSU ran all over them for 280 yards with just two plays zone, and pin and pull. Its seems Saban's only adjustment to uptempo spread is to get the NCAA to make it illegal.

Who said anything about OSU being barely(or otherwise) bowl eligible?
