Russia rang in the new year with gaudy excess, patriotic fervor and echoes of a Soviet past. In studios filled with visiting servicemen, brought in from the front lines to film the New Year’s extravaganza, hosts and performers toasted victory and mocked the West for the side effects of Russian sanctions. Comedian Yevgeny Petrosyan cheered for the troops, assuring them that the entire country was behind them. He taunted Ukraine and its Western allies: "Like it or not, Russia is enlarging!"

Noisy bravado couldn’t hide the fact that no one was drinking from the champagne glasses seemingly filled with sparkling water, or the blank stares on the faces of the visiting troops. One of the hosts, sports commentator Dmitry Guberniev, compared life to a biathlon—a grueling cross-country ski race with rifle shooting—and surmised: “If you’re having a hard time, then the finish line is near and victory is close!”

Holiday cheer notwithstanding, even Russian propagandists realize that hard times are only starting and attempts to summon a ghost of the Soviet past are directly related to a starkly different way of life that awaits the average Russian. On Wednesday, host of Solovyov Live Sergey Mardan struggled to contain his feelings about “the grinning and glee on the federal channels,” which continued even after the news of a HIMARS strike that killed dozens of Russian troops in Makiivka. Mardan raged: “What happened in Makiivka is a tragedy! A real tragedy! There didn’t have to be a phone call from the top for them to figure out that TV programming should be changed to something that is more fitting. Instead of vulgar anecdotes, put on any old Soviet movie.”

Is reality beginning to set in for Russians who have been lied to so fervently by the Kremlin-controlled media? It would appear so. Certainly the realities of modern life make it a much more difficult proposition today than it was in the Soviet era to try and be independent from the rest of the world and maintain a decent standard of living.

It’s pretty incredible the biggest country in the world suffers from losing territory paranoia and an extreme case of claustrophobia.

 

In all fairness our economy was suppose to be collapsed and Europe would all be freezing to death trying to burning furniture to survive by now.

It sounds like the pain hasn't begun yet. Right now, the pain of going against Putin is greater than the dire future ahead of them.

The reality of the situation hasn't set in yet, but they have put themselves into this situation by not holding their leaders accountable to the standards of freedom, democracy, and progress.

They let a strong man rule them without a whimper, and now that dictator has declared war on other countries on the world stage!

It's their fault, and so I hope they enjoy reruns of Soviet Swan Lake on a loop while they wait for the end. But they should face the consequences of their compliance with Putin's madness as well.

Spewing false narratives that sparked riots and protests. Getting stories blatantly wrong which lead to death threats and violence. Redefining the words racism to conviently excuse one group. I recall you were also posting some hateful, extremist things about non-straight patriots serving in the military not long ago. Why don't you chill and try taking a more moderate approach? Why let these professional manipulators in the media and politics anger and radicalize you like this?

Tossing out definitions we've successfully used within our societies since the 15th century to help perpetuate a dilusion that is a biological dead end. In a society that already cannot procreate at a replacement rate and whom now is forced to suppliment our population through mass immigration to make up the difference? That kind of common sense?

I don't think it's a good idea to enlist people who's entire life is a performance and whom are statistically emotionally unstable and probably suffering from depression or the like.
