VIEs in Chinese companies is an option. You can also invest directly in companies around the world whether it is South America, Africa or the Middle East. The option to not hold your money in the "west" does not mean having to invest in Russia.

Also you claim to live in the America and you probably made you money here with some American firm or company. Why the hate on the very system that made you so wealthy? Do you think you would have had the same opportunities in Russia?

As did my parents and grandparents, etc. There was a time when no running water was to be had and an outhouse was the toilet of choice, so I don't need lip service from those who've never experienced what I've experienced.

The whole point is a VIEs is easier for the majority of investors. I have a very small percentage of my portfolio in Chinese companies but it gives me diversification. I also have ETFs in South American companies. Unless you are a billionaire like Warren Buffet trading directly on the HK exchange is difficult, but I can easily buy a 500 or 1000 shares of BYD ADR online with little effort. It gives my portfolio diversity and allows me an EV alternative to TSLA.

 

And my whole point is that VIEs aren't even an equity/ownership interest, they're just a contract. And as far as ETFs goes, you have practically no BK protection with those either, as you have no direct ownership interest. Do you not understand this? I know, I know, but they are easy.

 

I understand but for the majority of investors it makes no difference. For an ETF you are relying on the expertise of the fund manager. That is the whole point. Instead of having to research lithium companies around the world I can throw some money in LIT or BATT and have exposure to the industry.

A good portfolio should have a diverse mix of investment. TBH I probably break that rule since I am heavily invested in my own company but outside of that I try to maintain a fairly good mix. Sure I am a bit tech heavy which means significant losses last year but overall I am very happy with my portfolio.
