If we had achieved a real victory over Panama through war Panama would never have challenged US interests in Panama again. There was no victory - hence we lost the canal.

Obamas legacy will depend on the success of his strategy for avoiding new land wars. If Mosul is recovered without US troops Obama will be the big winner - probably the only winner.

I'm just amazed at your rationale. A legacy is defined by the entirety of the presidency. Not one little battle that Iraqis could win, then lose 10 times more later.

    I need sources.

Panama had not a (*)(*)(*)(*)ing thing to do with maintaining permanent control over the Canal.

Changing war goal posts undermines your credibility but so long as you continue to do so, I'm going to continue to use your standard in regards to WW2.

We didn't win WW2 because fascism was still present in Spain and Brazil after the war.

The battle is not the issue. The need for US ground troops to take territory from an opponent is the issue. Obama may not even know that this will be his legacy. Presidents' legacies depend on some lasting memorable accomplished goal that can be attached to their presidency.

ObamaCare will also be part of Obama's legacy. Nationalized healthcare will also eventually be credited to Obama and his ObamaCare. Obama's success at dominating and manipulating the "opposition" RP Congress will impress historians. They will list Obama with the most powerful presidents

Will it be a legacy of generally positive accomplishments? Not in my opinion.
A demonstration that US ground forces are not needed to take territory from a determined enemy will be viewed by most Americans as very positive.

Obama made the BIGGEST mistake in the handling of Iraq, which allowed the ISIS problem to happen. He followed Bush's plan (that's why everyone calls Obama, Bush2.0) to pull out of Iraq early. Hell, even Bush said before Obama's decision "hey, I messed up. You CANNOT pull out of Iraq right now. This will cause a collapse of the country and terrorists will take over". Guess what happened.

We had it stabilized when our military ran the INO operations and the Iraqis had peace with only pockets of insurgencies.

Now it's one of the worst failed states in the world. Worse than Somalia.

Obama had a choice. His legacy is that he chose the wrong one.

War goals that do not serve the national interests of the US result inevitably to a loss. Other "war goals" are no substitute for a final decisive victory in war.

    Surely you know that.

The interest of the United States in Panama was to remove Noriega's military government that was violating the liberties of US citizens.

But I guess have US military members beaten and their family members sexually assaulted is okay to you.

All of that should be part of his legacy.

But if he is very lucky and recovers Mosul without the use of US ground forces that accomplishment is more likely to be his more enduring legacy.

    1) Only for the moment
    2) Big difference between someone who is on the ground and someone playing a video game.

If you think drone operations are a video game, you've never seen unedited footage from one.

Happens all the time. Surely you know that.
How often do we invade and conquer another nation in retaliation for the rape, beating or even murder of Americans?

If you can not figure out at least a few differences between playing a video game and being a soldier on ground in a foreign country then ......

Not much point is there ?

Spare me. You should be able to figure out at least a few differences between a drone operator and a soldier on the ground in a foreign country.

Moving of the goal post aside....

Usually the idea of war is to come with ways to better protect your own citizens, not those against your own people.

It is in ways like a video game, but, as I am sure you know, it is not a game.

Try on this question: Is a remote control operator in NV of a military drone that launches a strike in the ME a "combatant"?

We've removed quite a few foreign governments and replaced them throughout US history over similar outrages.

We achieved decisive victory in Panama. The military regime of Noriega was removed, the elected government allied to us emplaced, and the Panamanian government restricted in such a way that they can't threaten our interests any more. We haven't had a problem with them since.

The only way you could say we didn't win that war is by changing the goalposts like you are trying to do.

I see no difference between the view through a sniper scope at one mile and the view through a drone camera, except that the drone pilot probably has an even more detailed view of his target than the sniper does.

Good points. Lexington/Concord proved that standing in a line and exchanging volleys was an obsolete approach to war.
It took most of another century for militaries around the world to catch on.

Please provide some examples of nations we have invaded and conquered because of abuses of US citizens in those nations.

Mosul is the tiniest part of this HUGE F-up Obama created in Iraq. It's like in Jeopardy. Obama is well in the negatives, trying to get out of the hole. However, as all the sources I'm reading show, Obama is just trying to avoid ISIS situations all together.

    Conquered none.

    Invaded, plenty.

Panama, Greneda, Mexico a couple times, Haiti about a half dozen times, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, we fought a war with Britian over their treatment of American sailors and tried to steal Canada.

Obama's approval just rose to 59%. Why do you think that has happened?

Obama is probably not going to be blamed for the "HUGE F-up" because he did not start the wars with Iraq, and because Americans suspect that an extended US occupation of Iraq would have resulted in far more US casualties and ultimately an even bigger mess.

Have you seen the Restrepo documentary?

Yes, I've seen restrepo. It's about one of my old sister units. The OP was in a strategic travel base for terrorists. It created a HUGE problem for the Taliban until Obama had it shut down.

Also, Obama's approval rating numbers? Did you not read the thread and sources of the numbers? Foreign policy and handling of ISIS is the lowest portion of his rating lol. It's all about social issues- the ratings show it lol.
