Actually I think it IS wrong. Water doesn't spin the opposite direction down under. That doesn't mean the earth is flat though.
Water draining depends more upon physical effects than the Coriolis effect. But it definitely has an effect on cyclones, which spin counter clockwise in the Norther Hemisphere and counterclockwise in the Southern.

Actually it does when water is being drained out of a sink. A toilette is different as the water is by designed flowing in the spin direction the water is drained into the bowl. AA

It is a basic fact that if you have a full sink and you open the drain the water will spin in the opposite direction of the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern. AA

First place you didnt specified that the water needs to be still. Second even if it was still it isn't a guarantee if it even happens at all.
Try it. You fill a sink in the Northern Hemisphere and you open the drain and the water will spin in the same direction EVERY TIME. You do the same in the Southern Hemisphere and EVERY TIME the water will spin and drain in the opposite direction. AA
Have you tried it? And how do you know it's not the faucet being off center as at least one of my links say?
I own multiple properties and rental properties and every sink when draining spins water counter clockwise in the North. AA
First place of how many of those properties did you filled up and drained out? Second did you test it in the south?
Now, all that said, the Coriolis effect does play a role. Its just really tiny relative to all these other effects. Its about 10 millions the size of the effect of gravity. So, if you have a perfect basin, with completely still water, then the Coriolis force will make the water swirl opposite directions in the two hemispheres. This was demonstrated by Ascher Shapiro, a researcher at MIT in 1962.
