These 2 statements aren't mutually exclusive. With the RC church's history of protecting pedophile priests from secular prosecution, Im sure many pedophiles had this in mind.

 

The research doesn't support this kneejerk, redneck analysis. There are more married molesters ss a percentage of the whole (and in absolute numbers of course) than unmarried molesters. The percentage of priests who have been credibly accused is in line with most other groups of men.

Friends of mine, Husband/Wife who met in Parochial School,
left the Church over these child abuse scandals in their fifties.
Maybe if more people opted out, the Church would get the message better.
Although one has to admire Pope Francis standing up to the Curia.

Pell has been accused of multiple instances of child abuse spanning 35 years by 4 different people. Finally one of those people has received justice.

As a priest was somehow unaware of the rampant child abuse carried out by other priests he personally knew in the diosces of Ballarat. As Bishop he actually went to court to offer support to one of these priests - a man responsible for something like 70 cases of abuse. A number of Ballarat victims have subsequently committed suicide. As Bishop Pell also moved accused priests around rather than reporting the accusations to the police. One parish, in a working class suburb of Melbourne, had four child raping priests in a row, several the subject of previous allegations. Needless to say rich parishes with lots of well paid professionals in the pews didn't suffer in this way - talk about evil.

As Archbishop of Melbourne Pell implemented the 'Melbourne response' to child abuse, the first of its kind by the Church. It was at this time he raped the two boys in the current case. Victims who came forward were subjected to an investigation by Church appointed investigators. If it was decided their claims were 'valid' they were offered counselling by Church approved counsellors and they were offered compensation, capped at $A50,000, provided they gave up their right to take the Church to court. This was, of course, vastly less than they would have received in court. Pell saved the Church millions upon millions. Many of the victims who dealt with his were appalled by his cold attitude. Some said it felt as if they had been abused a second time. The implicit & sometimes explicit threat was that anyone who took the Church to court would face the full might of their expensive legal team - which is what happened (the defence of one priest cost $A1 million).

As Archbishop of Sydney he funded the legal team that established the 'Ellis defence', which stated that an individual could not sue the Catholic Church because it was not a legal entity. This also meant that the Church was not legally liable for offences committed by priests. That particular legal precedent took 11 years to overturn.

In short, the man is an evil child molester who consistently stomped on victims to preserve the position and finances of the Church. I hope he dies in jail.

Today child rapist George Pell was provided a character reference by conservative former Australian Prime Minster John Howard. Another conservative PM, Tony Abbott, was a close confidant of Pell and continues to defend him. Just to round out the picture of conservative PMs in Australia, the current incumbent, Scott Morrison, named prominent Pentecostal minister Brian Houston as a 'mentor'. Mr Houston was involved in covering up child abuse by his father, who was also a prominent minister in the same church.

Between them those three PMs spent over 14 years in office. A truly depressing thought.

 

Standing up my butt. Francis' predecessor became the first pope ever to retire because of this and people were saying he was next if he hadn't been more condemnatory. We need married priests and women in the priesthood or this millenial perversion will continue unabated.

Christ did not marry.
It is an emulation of Jesus and the way of his priesthood not to marry.

Amazing isn't it - one day we see Popey, palms upturned in prayer, all crocodile-tears and contrition, and determined to put a stop paedophilia in his outfit, and 3 days later one of his creatures is being led away in cuffs by the Aussie plod protesting and declaring he's going to 'prove his innocence' . . . and Popey is going to give him time to do it. And after a few weeks it'll all be forgotten about until the next scandal. **** 'the church', and **** everybody in it!

Interesting that his lawyer today described his crimes on vhildren "plain" and "vanilla" before getting a slamming by the judge.
Ps. Pell alledgedly has a heart condition and refused initially to leave the Vatican claiming he couldn't travel. Also the current archbishop of Melbourne ststed today he still classes Pell as his friend. When will balls be grown? When will the Catholic hierarchy be the moral they preach?

It may mean nothing to you, but I was an altar boy from a young age, maybe 8 or 9, and last served at age 21. Never once was I accosted or molested by any priest. I can say the same about my brothers and other friends in a small town.
