Almost two thousand have been killed by guns, just since Sandy Hook. The more the NRA fights the assault weapons ban, the more clear it becomes, that the NRA is putting these guns in the hands of nut jobs. Yesterday there was a story about a Nazi business owner that had been convicted of murder and imprisoned for thirteen years, and was caught with eighteen weapons and thousands of rounds of ammunition. It's illegal for convicted felons to have any guns. But the NRA makes it possible for criminals to get guns through gun shows that don't check out anyone that buys those guns.

How many of those two thousand lives would have been saved if the assault weapons ban took effect? We have laws against convicted felons purchasing or owning firearms, yet they still get them, how can that be possible its illegal for them to have them. How do more laws make me safer? or is that you want to feel good even if the law does nothing!

There is not even a remote possibility of an assault weapons ban being passed. The only thing that may happen, which I agree with, are universal background checks on all purchases, whether private sales or FFL sales.

Banning a particular gun because it looks "scary" is just idiotic. Especially since it's reponsible for .00004% of firearm related deaths.

Two years till the 2014 congressional elections. By then so much attention will be drawn to Sandy Hook, Aurora, and all the other gun slaughters that have happened, and will happen in the next two years, that the majority of the voters will vote out many more republicans, making a filibuster proof Senate, and taking away republican House control. The sequester will will help replace more republicans.

The cons think that they don't have the right people to get their message out to the voters. That's not the problem, it's their ideology that's the problem. The majority of voters are against assault weapons, and they are against giving everything to the rich. It's a loser ideology, doomed to fail.

The more attention the assault weapons ban gets, the more it gets pointed out that most shootings occur with handguns.

The more attention assault weapons get, the more it's made clear that the NRA and GOP are the cause of the problem, and will never be the solution. If the cons had a brain, they'd let the ban go though now, so that it wouldn't be such a glaring issue in 2014. Maybe they wouldn't lose so bad.

Gun violence in America stems more from cultural issues than the availability of guns themselves.

We're prone to violence more than a lot of our peers. We also have a lot of poverty issues.

You can ban all guns, but you still wouldn't be addressing the root causes of shootings. We'd just have stabbings rather than shootings, or we'd have more Tim McVeigh types.

The last time the Democrats passed an assault weapons ban, they got killed in the following election. The dominant position they had when Clinton first entered office evaporated right afterwards partially because of the gun ban.

    The Republican Revolution followed.

there is not even a remote chance a ban will pass.

but tell me this, what purpose is served by banning a gun that is only responsible for .0004% of all firearm related deaths? I know you think they look "scary" but they are the least classification of firearms used in crime or homicides. So how does bannin them preven crime or homicides?

There's an impenetrable stupidity associated with a belief
that the addition of one or two more laws to the roughly 25,000 current gun laws
    is going to do anything....
but make the lawmakers "feel" like they've accomplished something.

But do you know what this is really about?

    Demonization.

Progressive leftists are feverishly crafting yet another strawman campaign from whole cloth
for the sole purpose of demonizing vague and mysterious forces
that their "evil, stubborn, reckless, discompassionate, obstructionist" ideological opposition
    "won't let them fix"

Such tactics have, and continue to be a primary feature of progressive politics....
ObamaCo and their criminally complicit alphabet media
represent the unadulterated pinnacle of the practice.

The ban will happen after the cons lose big in 2014. Banning assault weapons WILL prevent mass slaughters, like Sandy Hook and Aurora. Yes there will still be morons like the one yesterday in Los Vegas that killed the rapper in the Maserati. But without assault weapons, NOBODY will be able to get off a hundred shots in one minute any more. As much as the GOP hates democracy, majority still rules in the U.S.. And that's why cons will remain in the minority, and assault weapons WILL be banned sooner or a little later. The cons lose on the gun issue, the women's issue, the health care issue, the welfare for the rich issue, the education issue, the minorities issue, the perpetual war issue, and all the rest of their stupid ideology. The more the south comes out of its ignorance, the smaller the GOP will get, until they go the way of the dinosaurs.

    how?

nobody can get off a hundred shots in one minute now.
no they won't. there is not enough democrats that support it. democrats(like me)own guns too.
    .
again, democrats own guns too. you do not have the support for a ban. and it would do nothing to reduce crime or homocides as they are responsible for .0004% of all firearm deaths.

There should be a law that anyone that snaps and has an assault weapon should be in an extremely wealthy area (i.e. Beverly Hills, Greenwich, Malibu, etc.). Why is all of the violence saved for kids and the poor?
