A murder rate 1/8th that of the US, sounds pretty good to me. (wild bill's link: Homicide is on the rise in Australia. Should we be concerned? (theconversation.com) )

The murder rate may well have more to do with the racial demographics of an area than any laws.
We've had discussions about this before.

The U.S. is the least white, with the most diversity, among all the White English-speaking countries.

That's a subject they don't want to touch with a 10-ft pole but the racial demographics of criminal activity lends all the validity in the world to it

The big question will be - where did he get those guns and I am betting that the home will be looked at as they should have been under lock and key. Some of the reporting said the family notified the police so maybe….

So because this one family was careless the rest of Western Australia has to have the strictest gun laws imposed?

If the media even reports it. Probably won't give it much coverage. You'd be surprised how much crime there can be without ordinary people knowing about it.
Maybe if it actually happens to them or someone they know, they might suspect that it could be part of a wider problem.

Media only seems to give lots of coverage to a story if it will help push a certain political agenda.

After the smashing success of the gun legislation in America (how many kids are killed each year by guns?) we are trying a different approach.

I thought you said you're in West Virginia?

So are you telling me that you would rather die as a victim of violent crime being unable to defend yourself for the greater good?

mainly felons killing felons and suicides. frankly, not a concern to most of us. I support the right of people to end their own lives. You know, their body, their choice like the abortion fan club says

Given the American predeliction for controlling others, maybe it would happen in the US. Don't forget all those government officials in the US are simply US citizens, just like the rest of you.

I'm confident this won't happen in Australia LOL

I'm in West Virginia. Can I not speak for Australians while I'm overseas?

It's a moot point. Australians have weighed the benefits versus the cost of the levels gun ownership and we have appropriate rules that we think are the right balance.

You can still buy a semi and a handgun if you have just cause.
    example.

Are you kidding me? It already HAS..... You have to have some sort of firearm certificate for a moderately powered pellet gun

And of course the Australian government doesn't consider self defense a just cause.

Except for when it comes to protecting their sorry asses in Parliament with guns.

So what's the example of just cause?

Well, yeah you have to have a firearm certificate to own a firearm in Aus. Hilarious that this surprises you.

To own a semi-automatic rifle or a handgun?

Competition shooting, working on a farm, etc.

Exactly.... Your government tells you that you have no right to defend yourself with a firearm but they themselves have no problem being protected with arms.

That really should piss you off a little bit

I support the idea that citizens should have ready access to the same level of weaponry that their own government might use against them
