And it's insane how their government just redefines words however they want.

An air gun is as close to a "firearm"..... As a transsexual man is a "female"

Someone should go into a court of law and force a prosecutor to define what a firearm is and ask them what the word "fire" in firearm actually means.

Maybe they're afraid of the dastardly and well-known mass air gun shootings...

    @DEFinning

I read most of your post to me last night where you were telling me that there is no such thing as a gun grabber basically.

I did not read it all ( my apologies as it was very late and I read some of it half awake right before bed and was unable to locate it again this morning)

But I did read enough of it to get the gist of it and I'm directing you to this thread so that you can see how this can progress in the United States.

There are plenty of countries that have gradually all but banned firearms. What makes you think things in this nation are so different?

Didn't you hear the left talking about Jan 6? A guy carrying an empty trash can was called "armed"... as were folks with a paperweight, and even a lunchbox. Crazies get crazier when they try to make one of their crazy points.

If I was President one of my first acts would be to prohibit the federal government from redefining words outside of the accepted definitions in order to pass bad laws.

There should be no ambiguous laws or laws based on definitions that are not the common definition in a dictionary that you pick up.

Of course then the federal government would probably just pressure the people that published dictionaries to change the definition....

And I have proven time and again that Australia is more racially diverse than you think.

We consider the government to be composed of the same people that we are. Important people can hire security if they want.

No I did not mean the US and my post was crystal clear.

Here in the USA our Nanny state government does not classify an air gun as a "firearm"

I believe they are regulated by the consumer products safety commission and not the ATF.

Our government considers the average citizen to be "important" enough to defend their self

You don't have to have money or political connections

I see politicians as no better than other citizens, and in many cases lower. If they need armed protection, so do shopkeepers, photographers, car mechanics, HVAC technicians, lingerie designers, zookeepers, professional table tennis athletes, geriatric nurses, and heavy machine operators, among others.

    Okay, then my point stands.

That you are surprised that we, in Australia, would still ask for regulation for air guns is notable.

    A firearm is a firearm...

But "average" folks can't afford it. So they just have to pray a lot, huh?

If a genie appeared and asked what you wanted and you answered that you wanted him to build a bridge across the pacific from America to Australia he would beg you to ask for another wish as that would be too hard and you then stated the above as your alternative he would answer “ right! How many lanes did you say you wanted on that bridge?”

If you actually read legislation you would realise it is written in precise terms but those terms do shift over time. And of course it is a lawyers job to find loopholes

Don't forget the guy who works all alone at the store from midnight till 6:00 a.m. ( at least when he is not on medical leave for a broken ankle ).

I think everyone's life is equally worth the same amount of self-defense. Some people seem to think they're overlords lives warrant more protection than they themselves feel entitled to.

And we weigh up the cost in other associated gun deaths for that freedom. We have decided that those other costs outweigh the benefit of unfettered gun ownership.

A firearm is a device that expels a projectile using the force of combustion or explosion.

Definitions are made up of words and words have meanings and those meanings matter.

When was the last time your country had a mass shooting with an air gun?

I'll save you the trouble and answer for you.... Once upon a Time it never happened

We categorize an air gun as a firearm here. Feel free to do otherwise in the US.

I bet the family members of those who are dead because they were unable to defend themselves against violent criminals might weigh in with a slightly different opinion.

That's the rule here. Guns are not for personal protection.

    Yep!

We do not want to end up like America because unlike America WE value life. We also believe that indivuals have a responsibility to the rest of society but because humans are dumb dangerous idiots at times that means that there should be the guardrails of legislation

Again you have to weigh this up versus parents with kids shot to death at schools, etc etc. The many deaths in the US related to easy firearm access.

We have looked across the atlantic, weighed it up and decided that we're not going to go your path.
