The Jones Act makes everything that comes into Puerto Rico cost a good deal more than it does on any other Caribbean island or on the Mainland. Making everything cost more than it should is just about bound to have lots of effects on anything, including Emergency supplies.
Trump didn't waive the Jones Act until Sept 28th.. Hurricane Maria hit the morning of Sept 20th. The facts of the week following Maria are damning.. He did everything except respond to the needs (and logistics) of helping the victims. https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...92ed0a-a522-11e7-8c37-e1d99ad6aa22_story.html
As you say, PR miles away from relief supplies. You'd think residents, and gov't officials, realizing they inhabit an ISLAND, would have steadily invested in emergency PREPARATIONS. Storms aren't a new phenomena. PR has survived, or at least suffered more than 50. You'd think that while driving the island into bankruptcy, a little might have been set aside for a RAINY DAY fund.
You sound really pissed Alek Who did trump kill? He's getting aid to them as fast as possible so your anger is just the usual liberal kneejerk trump bashing
the afl CIO seems to think lifting the jones act would not have helped. Why do you think it would have? https://aflcio.org/2017/9/29/fact-checking-inaccurate-news-about-jones-act
Rosello has repeatedly admitted that Trump has been very responsive. He asked Trump to waive the Jones Act late Wednesday night - Trump issued the waiver the next morning. “At @ricardorossello request, @POTUS has authorized the Jones Act be waived for Puerto Rico. It will go into effect immediately,” the White House press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, tweeted Thursday morning. Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló had tweeted earlier that he’d petitioned the White House Wednesday night for a temporary waiver, which would allow foreign ships to deliver items to the island.” NBC NEWS, White House Waives Jones Act to Help Storm-Ravaged Puerto Rico, by ADAM EDELMAN, SEP 28 2017. https://www.nbcnews.com/storyline/p...es-act-help-storm-ravaged-puerto-rico-n805436
Trump waived the Jones Act for Harvey and Irma immediately......... This factual timeline deserves its own thread. https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...92ed0a-a522-11e7-8c37-e1d99ad6aa22_story.html
Because they are the ones who have to get that aid out along with Congress. If they aren't acting, then they get the blame.
FEMA could respond like they did post Katrina. Deliver mobile homes and generators to residents. In a decade PR would still be just the worlds largest trailer park. Residents not on welfare work in the islands tourism industry. Resorts aren't subsidized. Only private investment can restore Puerto Rico. BTW ... PR is sure to default on it's debt, and guess who gets stuck with the tab.
^ Thread win. Trump is, of course, to blame for everything since the dawn of time, and I find the Mayor's buck-passing far more pandering and odious than Trump calling her out for it. And what's really disturbing is the sense that some in this country seem to actually be hoping for death in Puerto Rico so Trump can be blamed for that as well.
that didn't answer my question, or respond to the concerns raised by the afl-cio. Did you read what they had to say?
They haven't responded in the manner as to what we saw in Houston and Florida, oh that's right they want somebody else to do everything for them.
No I think Trump has evidence of both the Governor and the Mayor giving him Kudos for responding quickly. Do you think this Mayor will says she was drinking or on drugs a few days ago when she praised Trump for responding quickly? Governor of Puerto Rico Confirms Trump's Responded to His Requests For Help.... Ricardo Rossello, the Democratic governor of Puerto Rico, said Friday that President Trump has responded to his requests for help in the aftermath of two hurricanes, which devastated the island. First, Hurricane Irma clipped the U.S. territory, with the eye passing just north of the island, while Hurricane Maria directly hit Puerto Rico as a Category 4 hurricane. "I have to say that the administration has responded to our petitions. FEMA, Brock Long, has been on the phone virtually all the time with me, checking out how things are going," said Rossello. "The different components of the national guard, military, FEMA and our government are working together on the priorities," he added. Rosello’s comments come after the administration has come under fire by some for not doing enough to help Puerto Rico--or quickly enough.....snip~ https://townhall.com/tipsheet/leahbarkoukis/2017/09/29/gov-of-puerto-rico-trumps-responded-n2388708
Puerto Ricos debt is $73 Billion. Obviously they will default. To avoid the consequences of having the USA's credit rating downgraded, and inreasing the amount of interest we pay on the national debt, congress must draft a bail out.
Never mind that TX and FLA are contiguous US states ... The Virgin Islands, and Florida keys efforts were hampered by distance too. Oh! and that damned OCEAN of water.
Maybe she cut the government some slack for a few days, realising the logistical problems. Maybe it took a while for the true severity of the situation to emerge. Maybe she was afraid of upsetting Trump. I don't know. None of that has anything to do with Trump's response, which I note you sidestep. I'm not one of those claiming the government response has been inadequate - I have no idea. Clearly there are enormous logistical issues to contend with. But these tweets are so lacking in empathy, it's shocking, even for Trump.
The governor is smart enough to know he has to brag on Trump and suck up to him. I posted a thread about that yesterday several times. The Jones Act is a protectionist act that props up inefficient and uncompetitive US shipping companies.. Naturally the afl-cio would make such claims. The Jones Act hurts America and has hurt the PR economy.......
