President Trump on Sunday radically revised upward his estimate of how many Americans would die from the novel coronavirus, saying that anywhere between 80,000 and 100,000 people could die—after he cited a death toll of 50,000 to 60,000 roughly two weeks ago. “That’s one of the reasons we’re successful, if you call losing 80 or 90 thousand people successful,” Trump said in a Fox News town hall at the Lincoln Memorial.

“I used to say 65,000,” the president added, “and now I’m saying 80 or 90 and it goes up and it goes up rapidly, but it’s still going to be, no matter how you look at it, at the lower end of the plane if we did the shutdown.” He later added: “We’re going to lose anywhere from 75, 80 to 100,000 people.

I'm sorry that we're going to lose that many people. I hope we don't lose more.

It's interesting how the OP acts as if Trump himself is the one predicting the death numbers rather than doctors and scientist who are advising him and the authors of the models. But carry on...

The models have been off since day one. No one is paying any attention to them.

Everyone has been questioning the models. Everyone has been trying to figure out what's going on. It's his job to help direct the bureaucracy to treat this pandemic.

Trump doesn't make the predictions nor write the models. Sorry.

But he’s responsible for why those models exist. For any government policy to follow.

You are trying hard but no one is buying it.

If you go to a dr. for medical care. That dr. gives you his professional diagnosis or opinion because that's what he is trained and educated to do. Are you responsible if that diagnosis is wrong? That's basically how you're trying to twist this.

And he doesn’t listen to those who do and what they are suggesting is a way forward that minimises those numbers

No, he just says they're great no matter what they are and then takes full credit for it.

South Korea, with 50 million people, has 252 deaths, and started their program on the same day we did.

We are the most prosperous and scientifically advanced country in the world. We now have more Covid deaths than anybody

This thread is hysterical. The dems have kicked it into high gear. The desperation is real.

Models make predictions, they do not save lives. Actions save lives. Sorry you got confused. Wasn't the first model over 2 million deaths? Do you think anyone listens to the models anymore?

Trump said it a long time ago. If we are under 100,000 deaths it would be very successful.

In what way? How is quoting the President's own words "hysterical"?

South Korea has 50 million people, we have 300 million. We have 60,000 deaths they have 252. I don't see how you call that successful

Models absolutely save lives because those first models that showed 2 million dead was 2 million dead with zero pandemic controls. The fear that number instilled in hundreds of millions of people, including business owners and policy makers, is explicitly the reason why those pandemic control measure were put into place.

Success for Trump fans has always been a shifting goal-post.
Getting the GDP above a 3% growth rate was their first cry of victory - but then Trump never got above 2.9% so they shifted
    that goal post.
Taking the House and Senate in 2016 was declared a victory - then when he lost the House, it became someone else's fault.
Trump claimed he would reduce the debt ... now he's on track to have increase the debt $7 trillion in just four years.
Trump originally claimed that Covid deaths would be stopped at 15 ... and he declared that success - now the goal
post has changed to 100,000. Trump is just a typical politician. Nothing more.

There's nothing typical about a 4000% failure differential, Trump quite possibly qualifies as the most abysmal failure of all time

Some 60,000 aren't whining any more, they're dead, but their families are alive, and you will be hearing from them in November

But, but... it is just like the regular flu. Democrats just want to shut down the economy to hurt Trump in November. You can't make this stuff up.
