Were Jews ever really slaves in Egypt, or is Passover a myth?

Where is the real proof - where is the archeological evidence, state records and primary sources ?

    ----
Here's a question for you: what do actor Charlton Heston, DreamWorks animation studios and Former Prime Minister Menachem Begin all have in common? Well, they've all, at one time or another, perpetuated the myth that the Jews built the pyramids. And it is a myth, make no mistake.

Even if we take the earliest possible date for Jewish slavery that the Bible suggests, the Jews were enslaved in Egypt a good three hundred years after the 1750 B.C. completion date of the pyramids. That is, of course, if they were ever slaves in Egypt at all.

We are so quick to point out the obvious lies about Jews and Israel that come out in Egypt – the Sinai Governors claims that the Mossad released a shark into the Red Sea to kill Egyptians, or, as I once read in a newspaper whilst on holiday in Cairo, the tale of the magnetic belt buckles that Jews were selling cheap in Egypt that would sterilize men on contact – yet we so rarely examine our own misconceptions about the nature of our history with the Egyptian nation.

We tend, in the midst of our disdain for Egyptian, anti-Semitic conspiracy theories, to overlook the fact that one of the biggest events of the Jewish calendar is predicated upon reminding the next generation every year of how the Egyptians were our cruel slave-masters, in a bondage that likely never happened. Is this really so different from Jaws the Mossad agent?

The reality is that there is no evidence whatsoever that the Jews were ever enslaved in Egypt. Yes, there's the story contained within the bible itself, but that's not a remotely historically admissible source. I'm talking about real proof; archeological evidence, state records and primary sources. Of these, nothing exists.

It is hard to believe that 600,000 families (which would mean about two million people) crossed the entire Sinai without leaving one shard of pottery (the archeologist's best friend) with Hebrew writing on it.

It is remarkable that Egyptian records make no mention of the sudden migration of what would have been nearly a quarter of their population, nor has any evidence been found for any of the expected effects of such an exodus; such as economic downturn or labor shortages.

Furthermore, there is no evidence in Israel that shows a sudden influx of people from another culture at that time. No rapid departure from traditional pottery has been seen, no record or story of a surge in population.

In fact, there's absolutely no more evidence to suggest that the story is true than there is in support of any of the Arab world's conspiracy theories and tall tales about Jews.

So, as we come to Passover 2012 when, thanks to the “Arab Spring,” our relations with Egypt are at a nearly 40 year low, let us enjoy our Seder and read the story by all means, but also remind those at the table who may forget that it is just a metaphor, and that there is no ancient animosity between Israelites and Egyptians.
Because, if we want to re-establish that elusive peace with Egypt that so many worked so hard to build, we're all going to have to let go of our prejudices.

My father did a documentary on the Ark of the Covenant as well as some other research into biblical lore.

I remember two things that he said that were of interest.

    1. that migrants would often come to Egypt to work when life became untenable. I forget whether Jews were specifically mentioned.

    2. That the Red sea references were mistranslated and that it was the Reed sea that they crossed. So Nile Delta.

I'm pushing these ideas I'm just throwing out some bouncing off points. I'm still neutral as to whether I believe these statements.

I'm suspect your father knew much more abt the subject that you've perhaps missed - and not paid more attention to . WE all do that with our parents.

Yes , yr father was correct. some Canaanite tribes did travel to Egypt to escape a famine . At that time there was no such people called "jews" They remained in Egypt for many centuries . The story abt them having been slaves sounds like another myth in playing the victims and to gain other peoples sympathy.

THe parting of the Red Sea is also a folk fireside yarn to gain attention + impress a largely superstitious society. Crossing a" reed sea" what is today the Suez Canal sounds much more believable.

The tribe who left Eqypt was more likely criminals/ thieves how else would -so-called " slaves " have acquired so much gold to caste into a Golden Calf - Bull worship was common in many cultures. In Egypt, whence according to the Exodus narrative the Hebrews had recently come, the Apis Bull was a comparable object of worship, which some believe the Hebrews were reviving in the wilderness; - alternatively, some believe their God was associated with or pictured as a calf/bull deity through the process of religious assimilation and syncretism.

Among the Egyptians' and Canaanites neighbors in the Ancient Near East and in the Aegean, the Aurochs, the wild bull, was widely worshipped, often as the Lunar Bull and as the creature of El.-
    EL or Elohim.or Yahwey.

Well it was while since he did the documentary. 2004/2005 I think. Yeah you're right about the not listening to parents biz.

Yeah I never really bought that story either and after that the Jewish tribe is supposed to 20 years wondering the desert.

Actually it does seem more believable in this version of events. The classic story seems somewhat romanticized. And also the bible itself could of suffered from the Chinese whispers effect that is so common throughout history.

There does not seem to be any real evidence to support the narrative of the Bible. A couple of years ago an idea was floated that what the Bible is describing is a contraction of Egyptian power over the Jews in their homeland.

I'm sorry but this is rather juvenile.

I'll make it clear. If you have a problem with somebody's opinion then oppose it with a clear and concise argument.

I've certainly not opposed the fact that Jesus Christ was crucified 2000 years ago. What we were exploring was the story of the Jews or whatever peoples were there at the time that inhabited the area before JC's crucifixion.

Please check the OP its not abt Jesus its about the Exodus myth claiming they were slaves in Egypt . There no evidence whatsoever outside the OLd Testament/Hebrew Bible.
    "
The Biblical Exodus Story Is Fiction -

Some Christians still cling to the opinion that their Bible is infallible. They delight in telling us that the Bible is the inspired word of God, even though it’s well documented that the Bible contains more than 400 contradictions, not to mention that it reflects the Bronze-age morality of the time. Well, here comes science to kick religion in the nuts once again: the Jews were never slaves in Egypt! - .dpuf

    IT NEVER HAPPENED .
    --------

If things did indeed happen as it says in the Bible (and the Torah), there would have to be some archaeological evidence. But there is none.

Further, there is no evidence of any kind that Egypt even used slaves, and certainly no evidence that they enslaved an entire nation.

The workers that built the pyramids are known to be well payed Egyptians. The pyramids weren’t even built in the right time period, being 800 to 2,000 years older than the supposed “Exodus”.

The same techniques used to track the migration patterns of ancient humans by examining DNA also show that there was absolutely no procreation between ancient Egyptians and ancient Israelites during the time that the story was supposed to have taken place.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but if an entire nation was enslaved for hundreds of years, surely there would have been some inter-breeding. In short, this story never happened.

And this isn’t even “news” – of course, the scientific community is across the subject, but even conservative Jewish sources admit that there is no evidence (but they still have faith! And some stuff about metaphors and such…)

To drive the point home, I’m even providing sources for you (although, a quick Google search could give you dozens more…) Basically, everyone in the know admits that what is written in the Bible and Torah simply didn’t happen, not at all, not even the non-supernatural, core plot… So next time you hear someone tell you the Bible is infallible (or anything about Passover whatsoever) send them A LINK TO THIS THREAD.

....... MGB - remember , not only did the "Exodus" not happen but Jesus was'nt in Egypt either. (wink)

All i know is that the "Palestinian Nakba" never happened.

Seriously why did you bother to comment here?

You know what yes it is unfortunate what is going on in Syria but it's not the only conflict that's claiming lives at the moment.
And debating about it on a public forum won't really do much to end it either.

As for the Arab Nakba in Palestine in 1948. Well I'd sure love to know what else you call it when people temporarily leave a conflict zone hoping to come only to find it's not possible anymore.
Maybe instead of Nakba why not just "bad luck old chum, try again later"
And another thing what the hell does that have to do with what we are talking about?

Who the FxxK ask for proof after thousand of years ?? Get a life.
Deal with real problems NOT rubbish.
    Thx.

P.s - Regarding the Palestinian lie "Nakba" , Have you heard about the Jewish Nakba ? 850000 were expelled from their houses
between 1948 - 1973 ... Maybe instead of Nakba why not just "bad luck old chum, try again later"

If that's really ALL you know and the limit of your knowledge - then I'd suggest you make an effort to remove your blinkers and try learning + coming to know more abt Jewish Terrorists / Irgun/LEHI - Stern Gang's policies of ethnic cleansin - transforming a land where the majority wss non-Jew , was - prior to 1948-1950s to a non-Jewish minority.
How incoming Jews from Europe - displaced/dispossessed the Palestinian Arabs and stole their lands
About three years ago I read this book - written by a Jew - I'd suggest you get a copy and learn,

Ok I think this thread is going way off course.

Put the politics of today aside. We are here to debate the stories surrounding the exodus which is a part of biblical history.

If anybody want's to talk about the long running Arab-Israeli conflict go somewhere else. There tons of threads dedicated to the same "locked horn" conduct of debate.

Egyptians built pyramids and it was done seasonally. Half year they farmed, half they cut and built with stone cut by water from Nile.

Reed Sea is the Bardaweel lake in Sinai not the Delta. The Hebrews crossed the Reed Sea not Red Sea

Yeah I remember the bit about seasonal labour.

I was just guessing about the whole Reed sea business but I think the Bardaweel lake is much more believable.
If the exodus happened the way that it was reported to have then they would have some way of sustaining themselves rather than just drifting aimlessly through the harsh Negev desert.
