COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A 22-year-old gunman opened fire in a gay nightclub in Colorado Springs, killing five people and leaving 18 injured before he was subdued by “heroic” patrons and arrested by police who were on the scene within minutes, authorities said Sunday.

Two firearms, including a “long rifle,” were found at Club Q after the Saturday night shooting, said Police Chief Adrian Vasquez.

Investigators were still determining a motive, and the attack was being investigated to see if it should be prosecuted as a hate crime, said El Paso County District Attorney Michael Allen.

Police identified the gunman as Anderson Lee Aldrich, who was in custody and being treated for injuries. A man with the same name and age was arrested in 2021 after his mother reported he threatened her with “a homemade bomb, multiple weapons and ammunition,” according to authorities.

Police did not confirm whether it was the same person, saying they were investigating whether the suspect had been arrested before.


Authorities were called to the Club Q at 11:57 p.m. Saturday with a report of a shooting, and the first officer arrived at midnight.

“At least two heroic people” confronted the gunman and stopped the shooting, Vasquez said, adding: “We owe them a great debt of thanks.”

Of the 18 people injured, some were in critical condition and at least two had been treated and released, officials said, adding that some were hurt trying to flee.

Sadly, the gunman is in the hospital.

 

I wonder if this is another Pulse type shooting?

 

One report said that one person was shot multiple times while being chased. I wonder if it was a targeted attack over a previous dispute

It's been almost a day now and police are completely clueless as to a motive why somebody would shoot up a gay bar. Seriously?

"... 39 patrol officers responded ..." he was in custody within five minutes of police being notified. Uvalde police, please take note.

 

This is an open carry state, but we do know that testosterone, alcohol, and gunpowder don't mix well, so having a prohibition against guns in bars is a no-brainer.

 

I'm glad they take their time. I wouldn't want this guy to skate on a technicality. You in some kind of hurry?

I didn’t hear the WhiteHouse commented about the mass shooting last week at U-VA. I guess there was no political advantage to comment but rather a disadvantage had Biden commented.

Did I see a rifle might have been involved? No way that could be, just no way. Knives are responsible for far more homicides than rifles in the USA so I am told, so it's okay to have rifles. My reference to knives was entirely facetious, and related to comments made by another on another thread.

 

I would say there's a pretty good chance the guy does not like gay people. But until the motive is known..... That's just an assumption... However logical it may be. I'm just catching up on this thread and this topic so for all I know the motive has already been determined?
