In this fantasy world you envision where parents use their own money to fund the schools they send their kids to, what happens to the kids of parents living in poverty? What teacher or administrator is going to work in an inner city school where the parents can't afford to compete with affluent areas where they can pay their teachers well?

 

There currently exist many forms of public assistance programs. One could certainly be devised to help such people.

Additionally, concerned citizens, such as yourself perhaps, could establish and contribute to foundations for the same purpose.

So you are okay with a system where the children of parents with financial means get the best education money can buy while the children of the less fortunate are subject to the vagaries of other people's generosity. Now I'm beginning to understand what the kind of two-tiered education system you think should exist would look like.

Public assistance means tax dollars. The vey thing you said you think people should be allowed to withhold if they want to spend the money for other things. So...should my wife and I, because we no longer have kids in school, be allowed to withhold our school appropriated tax dollars so we can improve our wine collection? If I and millions of others are against a military action by the US government can we not pay the part of our tax dollars dedicated to the DoD?

 

I don't recall saying anything about people being able to decide what taxes they choose to pay.

You said you opposed eliminating public schooling because poor people would be unable to arrange for the education of their children. So I offered a suggestiong that poor people might then receive public assistance to aid them in doing so.

You suggested that people who want to educate their own kids be able to withhold tax dollars that go towards public education. Should I be able to do something similar regarding money that goes to the nation's defense if I want to join a bunch of militia nitwits who are happy to be responsible for our own defense? Where does your a la carte version of taxpayer control over how tax dollars are spent end?

 

I mentioned a property tax rebate. I did not suggest people can just withhold taxes because they don’t like something. If you think I did, please provide the quote.

I don't have an a la carte version of taxpayer control.

But a property tax rebate is really a half measure. The correct solution is for states to entirely eliminate their government run schools. Civil society can do a better job, as with most things.
