    Yep, I second leaving Afghanistan.

Who knows?... Maybe we'll do something about our border now.

How were we defeated? We crushed Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi military can stand on their own. Mission accomplished!

Setting a date doesn't mean the War is over right now as your title implies. Until all of our soldiers are home and not dying over there the war is not done. I kept being told the war was done when I was there, but the memo wasn't given to the enemy who lobbed rockets on a regular basis onto the base I was on.

The goal was the removal of saddam and a democratic government to take his place. Done deal.

If the objective was to replace a dictator with a representative government, then we succeeded.

    Ya' think?

There is a really big bill to pay...as measured in several Coins of the Realm. Here in the West, let us hope that the Bill labelled "Sins of the Father" does not follow is down the Halls of History and end with a nuke set off in a City Near Us. We stay at our pleasure...we leave at our peril.

    Thanks for being there.

Well, that was one objective, and it appears we have genuinly accomplished it. Eliminating WMDs was the other...which I suppose you could say we accomplished in the 90s...soooo maybe put a check by that one as well? At least we're sure now for whatever that is worth.

In the long run Saddam was a pain and a security threat in the region. We'll not only be able to move out of Iraq after this but also Saudi Arabia, which ticked a lot of people off.

And while the occasional explosion might just be the new "normal" there, it's not like Saddam wasn't letting his people die in droves under sanctions. So I'm hoping for a net improvement for the Iraqi people as well.

We apparently have a different definition of failure. It looks like all of our major objectives were accomplished.

Iraq changed America forever. It changed the way Americans see each other.

Ah...Saddam has been out of power for eight years and has been dead since 2006.

A "democratic" government was installed some years ago...

So, based on your "done deal" what the hell has the US been doing there.

Sorry, but if it was that simple, that Obama cold wave his arm and end it, why didn't he do it day one and saved some American lives?

Two and a half months notice smacks of electioneering.

And it only cost us a few trillion dollars...

Let's see how long it takes before another dictator takes over.

That was not the objective. The objective was to neutralize an alleged threat to the United States originating from Iraq via terrorism and WMD's.

People sometimes revise things to change what the war is about in order to take consolation in the idea that at least something was acheived in the end, and as good an acheivement as that may be, in the original context of the necessity for the war, the war can best be described as a waste of resources and human life.

Trillions? It cost less than the Stimulus and made more of a difference.

    Oil?

The Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq didn't mention anything about oil.

Mission accomplished... but not what you think. The mission was to spend trillions of dollars. Another victory for the MIC over the US people.

By the way.. the US will keep 10,000s of NON combatant troops Armed to the teeth. This is just a symbolic withdrawal. US will maintain bases throughout the country.

Dictators normally require US approval before they are allowed to takeover and carry out their evil deeds.

Ya think? The United States is obviously on a mission to bring peace to the world. When Iraq and Afghanistan become thriving countries in the future, we're going to have 2 strong allies in the Middle East. Most of us won't be around when that matters, but it will most certainly matter for future generations. We accomplished more than you think.
