I think it means what it says. Such instruction is appropriately handled by parents, not schools. Period.

Discussion about sexuality is nothing new, especially in later grades, and this ban goes all the way to 12th grade

Europeans are also way ahead of us, and have always been, but they don't wonder about it. US being behind is old news. Europeans have have discussions about sexuality (as do Asians), but it doesn't mean they don't have time for anything else. They have PE too, but it doesn't mean there is no time for math. Let's not pretend 'social justice' takes up so much time that there is no time for anything else. That's ridiculous hyperbole. Besides, we have banned so many history topics that there is lot of room for other things. PS Europeans talk about things in history which might make them uncomfortable. We're the only ones banning topics.

It doesn't say its left to the parents, it simply says such speech is criminalized at school. Such censorship is new and is guaranteed to lead to widespread ignorance, including teen pregnancies and STD. Sex ed in US started in 1940 for the obvious reasons.

Combine skyrocketing increase in teen pregnancies with abortion bans........this pseudo-con experiment is not going to end well.

What was it your mother told you about "we have always done this" as an excuse"

Nothing wrong with teaching history. The problem is teaching political ideology. It isn't an academic subject except in Poli Sci courses. I'm sure the Euros would love to have you join them if you prefer their way of doing things.

Some things have been done a long time for a reason, like disinfecting drinking water. Should we stop it? Sex ed in US started in 1940, but now the pseudo-com argument is that its not appropriate. Sexuality is a taboo once again.

Awwwww.....there you go. Such a profound 'argument'.

so, you are okay with the teacher telling the kids that some kids have gay parents? So, you might not like this law.

What did I say to indicate that I would support that? I don't necessarily oppose it either. If some student asked that question she could either say yes, or "so I've heard" or "that has nothing to do with our subject."

But the teacher has no biz even getting into it any further with the possible exception of a sociology class. If she just answered the question to be polite and didn't promote further discussion or much less ask "who approves and who disapprovesof gay marriage?", then I refuse to believe that she would be prosecuted. If she were, I'd happily defend her.

Is this what you all are talking about?

The bill, which some opponents have called "Don't Say Gay," was signed by DeSantis on Monday. It reads, "Classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur in kindergarten through grade 3 or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards."

If so, I have absolutely no problem with that. as you have been told a hundred times, there is no prohibition on saying gay (so why do you claim otherwise?) If a third grader asked for "instruction" on sex orientation or gender identity, which seems unlikely, as a teacher I would say "there are some things we need to ask mom and dad about, not the teacher, and that's one of them," or words to that effect. But not because of the law, but because engagement with the student on sexual matters is stupid with or with the law. Same as if one of the kids asked where babies come from.

    Also this:

The legislation enables parents to file legal challenges against school teachings they have personal objections to. Moreover, all lawsuits filed against schools by parents under the act must be paid for by the sued school or district.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florida_Parental_Rights_in_Education_Act

That means civil lawsuits to get injunctions and money damages if proved. Where are the criminal penalties you all keep referring to?

Criminalized? Are you sure about this? I'm not saying you're wrong, because I don't live there, but it sounds facially unconstitutional, a firing offense at worst, or merely contemplates civil suits at most.

Oh, now I "like" "teen mothers on welfare"? LOL, what the heck??

Crimes are acts or omissions that result in fines or imprisonment, think DWI, burglary, tax fraud, assault, which are different from a civil cause of action. Crimes are found in penal codes. That's not what you have in Florida.

And now you're misusing "misdemeanor"! Misdemeanors are also crimes, but the Florida law didn't even create a misdemeanor. It isn't even a "petty offense."

And you STILL won't admit that the word "gay" isn't in the law, even though you just said above that it is. Be fair.

Odd that you view teaching grade school children about sexual orientation and gender identity as "rights and freedoms"

There is no ban of discussions about sexuality and they instead prohibit INSTRUCTION on sexual orientation or gender identity. AND the extension being considered is through the 8th grade, not 12th.

    We can see the hyperbole.

Proline likes hyperbole and exaggeration to make his point. There is no criminal law involved.

To those who disagree with me in this thread, you presumably would WANT Florida to prevent me from instructing kids on sexuality, and trust me, I've got credentials enough to at least substitute teach now, and to get a certificate in maybe a year with supplementary courses. I have been a guest speaker at the university level, inside classrooms, not out on the sidewalk with a bullhorn.

Now, you want me, or someone who thinks like me, instead of yourself, teaching your kids about sex? About bigamy laws? Abortion? Masturbation? Limits on porn and nude dancing? Constitutionality of chemical castration? Of the age of consent? Erections? Erectile dysfunction? Defining a woman? Explaining menstruation? You trust me to do that?

See this law protects you and yours. Stop worrying about the few teachers who are just itching to lead classroom discussions on sexuality and worry about yourself. It is you who are caving to the government here.

Kindergarten through 8th grade can get all the sex ed they need in school without "instruction" on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Zero teachers have provided any class, in any grade, on how to do anal and give blow jobs. It's literally a bill that prevents nothing.

Well, presumably it provides some reassurance to the voters with kids who sent those particular legislators to the legislature. As, in the majority of voters.

We wouldn't want minorities dictating to the majority.

Because DeSantis has told these non thinkers that their kindergarteners are getting live demos of blow jobs. The kids are encouraged to participate.

It prevents. Here's what it prevents in case you were wondering. See post 182.

It literally shoves gay kids back into hiding. If they want to talk about it to a counselor, the school has to notify the parents that their child is gay. It’s literally the first time in history where legislators are forcing kids to stay hidden or be outed to their parents before they are ready. It’s sick.

I think that amendment has been withdrawn. If so, your post should he deleted.

It is difficult at times to see where the far right 'conservative' movement is heading. We can, however, be sure that Texas and Florida are in the vanguard.

    Regards, stay safe 'n well.
