Florida Republicans introduce 3 new bills to expand state's 'Don't Say Gay' law

So, now there are 11 bills in Florida to target gays and trans folks, but I guess everyone know the so called "don't say gay" bill was only the beginning and to be expanded in the future. One bill would expand it to all grades. Another bill would expand it to charter schools and private schools. And a third bill would criminalize the use of pronouns for trans students.

It surprises me DeSantis would double down when he is dropping like a rock in the polls for being too authoritarian. Maybe he needs to realize most people are not as obsessed with culture wars as he is.

By the time the Florida Legislature kicked off its 2023 session Tuesday, Republican lawmakers had already pre-filed a trio of bills that would expand a recently enacted education law that restricts instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Nearly a year ago, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed the Parental Rights in Education bill, or what critics have dubbed the “Don’t Say Gay” law. The measure prohibits “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity” in kindergarten through third grade “or in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.”

We live in an age of eroding rights and freedoms, and I worry before this is over we'll make the Taliban look good by comparison. The problem is that we're not hearing much opposition to this and that makes me worried.

 

There was no "don't say gay law".

 

Why ?

 

You don't know what people mean when they say "so-called don't say gay law". Its a nick name.

 

But if we can't teach kids from the book that tells them how to submit nudes underage to grindr, how can we tell them that the gays are thing that exists?!?!?!?!?

 

They are overplaying the hostility card toward LGTB and the result is seen in the plummeting polls. DeSantis is trailing by large margins in the polls. As for push-back, - there is plenty, and some groups have issued a ‘travel advisory’ to people planning to come to FL or to relocate here. Florida has a very large gay community (about 900 000), so this is likely going to back-file.

With these sloppily written laws no one knows what you can and cannot teach anymore without being accused of a crime.

Take your kids to church if you need a morality police.

 

Excellent news. I bet the OP won't read any of those proposed bills just like he didn't bother to read the original one. This why he keeps spewing untrue nonsense about all of them. The first one was very responsible and really did just spell out parental rights wrt their child's education. It is amazing how mad low I.Q. Democrats became about it entirely based upon lies.

Weird, I feel just as free and have the same rights as I had 20 years ago. I keep hearing people say on the news and on political sites that I am losing rights, but strangely it hasn't seemed to have affected me at all.

 

I don't believe any Republicans in Florida have ever tried to pass a "Don't Say Gay" bill. Why make such a blatant lie right off the bat? You can still say gay in all parts across the State of Florida.

 

Look at the mess they've created already. They were trusted with our children and crapped the bed.

Florida is the number one state people are fleeing too with the largest influx of people of any state
EVERY Democrat in the Florida Senate voted for the parental rights bill
And nobody in Florida is attacking gays over any bill

The parental rights bill stops people from discussing gender dysphoria with 5 year olds.

You lied and claimed there was a don't say gay bill in Florida. There never was and the parental bill of rights law didn't even mention the word gay. If you had bothered to read it you might know that.

 

Jury is still out on that one. I am not sure how authoritarian BS can be good, but we'll give it time to see if it works.

Before you accuse other posters of lying, which is an honor-less thing to do, please ask a friend to explain you what it means when people say "so-called", or why people use quotation marks.

Yes, Florida is getting extremely authoritarian with the government playing the moral police, punishing / threatening businesses who don't agree, criminalizing speech, removing elected officials and replacing with the political appointees. Clearly they overplayed their hand because the polls are kicking their butts. Of course a party apologists will support it, because they support anything without question. Independents, libertarians and many conservatives are NOT not amused,

Something weir always happens when the government gets involved in everything. Every authoritarian experiment, usually communist, have failed, so I don't know what they are thinking or expecting pandering to such small base of loyalists.

 

Trans rights, gay rights, women's rights... take your pick.
