Please explain the Coronavirus. Is it that deadly or not?

Some Iranian Medical staff talk about the situation of Health workers in USA, who have not enough equipment.
It is very sad.

 

I think I heard at the beginning that only about 10% of people who contract corona would have symptoms bad enough to require medical attention. So I wonder why all the hospitals in all large cities are full and overflowing with corona patients? Is it that the virus has turned out to be much more deadly than thought? Or do we simply, because of the panic, have a lot of people running to the hospital whose symptoms don't require it? And then they get sicker.
