Just a note for comparison. Coronavirus has been on American soil for a little over a month and killed 28 so far with the vast majority being elderly. Just over this past weekend 26 people were shot in the City of Chicago with 11 of them being children, 4 died.

Well. If you liked H1N1 you'll love this one.
    H1N1 R0 = 1.2 -1.6. Death rate .02%
    COVID 19 R0 ~2.4. Death rate ~ .6 to 3.4%

You did not aswer the question.

And, nobody has suggested that this problem started here. It started in China. Everybody knows that.

Who is scaring your friends and how is that being done?

And, the "promoting panic" thing is just plain ludicrous. So, don't bother trying to defend that one.

we do not know yet as do not know how many have it or have had it or what it will mutate into in the future, when we will get vaccines, ect...

it's easier to spread as no vaccine right now, as many get the flue shot every year which helps reduce spread

people worry cause if they get it, and they have loved ones 60+, they could give it to them and this seems to be most deadly to the elderly

Stay off forums that spread panic,
    Wash your hands,
    Never pet a burning dog.
    You will be fine.

Well, I guess we need to ship more guns to Chicago!

But, that doesn't sound like a good reason to ignore COVID19.

The thing with this case is that personal exposure is the major means of transmission. In order not to be swamped with cases, we need to take public action to slow that transmission.

Luckily enough, this is something we can all do!! And, in various regions there are other actions that can be taken as well.

...regardless of how many more guns are needed in Chicago.

To date , I am left to believe that it is far more infectious than the common flu, but it is no more deadly. Furthermore, it seems that some people who contract the China virus experience relatively mild symptoms. There have even been reports of people being asymptomatic and still being contagious. Unlike the common flu, the China virus seems to spare the very young. Those most at risk are the old and otherwise medically compromised. I don't want to get any kind of flu, including the Kung-Flu, but I don't fear for my life.

    Good points.

    Don't touch your face.
Don't go to the hospital without first calling your doctor.
Stay away from concentrations of people - rallys, rock concerts, conventions, cruise ships, sporting events, etc.
If you are symptomatic, STAY HOME.
Listen to experts or those who are directly conveying what experts are saying without adding political crap.

Experts may tell you whether some of this is less necessary due to where you live.

agree, that is a good point as well, we do not want to have overburden hospitals with increased load, if we can slow the spread, it's easier to handle

Everything you touch in public is nasty, this has been the case for decades. Wash you hands, eat well, sleep well, take your vitamins and you will be just fine. You have an immune system that fights for you every day. Make sure your immune system has everything it needs to do it’s job. Do these things and you will be just fine.

agree, and I would have to be pretty bad to go to the hospital as that has probably the highest risk of catching many things, sitting in the waiting room with a bunch of sick people, may not have it going in, but leave with it

This is simply bonkers, and you're not doing anyone any good repeating this. The estimated R0 for this is between 2 and 3. That means that one person is infecting 2 or 3, each of them infecting 2 or 3 more, etc.. You're claiming we're off by a factor of 100. That's insane. That would make it 10 times worse than measles, which is one of the most infectious diseases known. If we're off by even a factor of 10, that would still make it more contagious than measles, which it obviously isn't even close to. It's a coronavirus, not Captain Trips.

    More nonsense.

They say an elevator button is enough!

I also hear that it's been necessary to refill soap containers in men's rooms!! But with blowers and no paper, how do you open the door? (pet peeve)

I think they're trying to create brackets around what it could possibly be.

We're not really going to know at this point, as almost nobody is being tested.

Here in Seattle, the UW Medical Hospital is now testing employees! They have a drive up station so nobody has to go inside.

We're probably a ways away from even having symptomatic people in the general public tested.

My guess is that we're getting no more than the best statistics that can be based on little info.

Well, once we hit 1,000 deaths from Coronavirus then we’ll have a better understanding. As of now COVID 19 is only reported on tested subjects. Estimates place many more infected that will never succumb to testing due to minimal symptoms.

Flu results in "about 250,000 to 500,000 yearly deaths" worldwide, Wikipedia tells us. "The typical estimate is 36,000 [deaths] a year in the United States," reports NBC, citing the Centers for Disease Control.

So CDC says flu contributes to 36,000 deaths in the US every year. Do you really think that C-19 will even come close to that?

    I hope it doesn't reach 36,000.
But had it started at the beginning of flu season - you betcha.
    Edit:
Lets hope we have a vaccine before next year.

You mean major transmission like the common flu? You mean the common flu that is responsible for tens of thousands of American deaths each and every year? We need to build up immunity and ride this overhyped social media scare tactic out. A healthy lifestyle will and responsible hygiene will be the key not only to this disease but the many others soon to follow.

The death toll is at 29 right now with the vast majority being elderly and having underlying issues. What’s the youngest American to have passed away from Coronavirus?

I think that is the big concern. The healthcare system will be overwhelmed and not be able to handle the numbers of critically ill, leading to more deaths.

We need to stop fretting about test kits and focus on protecting the elderly with compromised health conditions. I don't want them taking a bed away from young people. (I know that sounds harsh)

Yeah. That's why they keep trying to flatten out the curve with quarantines.

Unfortunately you have no natural immunity to this, it's new. But you're right about staying healthy helps.
What pro-active measures that you can take.
    (Get's on soapbox)

Wash your hands frequently. Your hands are the root of you getting and sharing many of your illnesses. Someone rubs their eye, scratches their nose, pops a peanut in their mouth and then shakes your hand and you grab one of the peanuts and you too are infected. Anyone who has been through food service sanitation knows that nearly all cases of food born illnesses come from the preparer's hands. Some health inspectors test kitchen staff by offering to shake their hand. If they do and don't immediately wash their hands they get written up for a major violation.

Stop shaking hands. I live where there have been several Ebola outbreaks nearby. When ever a case is identified we immediately stop shaking hands and bump elbows instead. Unless you are extraordinarily flexible you never touch your face with your elbow. While your at it don't do the kissy kissy thing like the French. We don't close schools and churches and other public buildings but set up hand washing stations at their entrances.

If you need to cough or sneeze. Do it into a tissue and immediately wash your hands. Better still, do like the kitchen staff, turn your head and do so smothered in your shoulder.

Suggest to your grocer to set up hand washing and glove stations at the entrance. Unfortunately many people like to handle produce before buying. If they've had their hands washed it would lessen the chances of their sharing what's on their face. So much the better if they are wearing gloves put on by the helpful person at the door to remind them not to touch their faces.

If we all do these things the rate of transmission goes way, way down giving the doctors and scientists time to develop vaccines. It would also greatly reduce other disease transmission as well if we got serious about it. When you think of the billions of meals served every week in restaurants and how rarely we hear about illnesses being transmitted by them you know these rules work and just need to be expanded to the general population.
